Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Kirby Cane? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across Kirby Cane and the remainder of Norfolk. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When the motor has not yet turned over and the petrol is still inside that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much got in. One call to us is enough: our team can explain what follows from here. Do this right away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Don't fire it up. Started anyway? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car usually won't run, so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for a few miles. People get that muddled. It isn't all right — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition be.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests — so don't put diesel on top to dilute it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Chapel Lane, anywhere — a difficult place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • Keep your position prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts NR35 2 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van arriving and the van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what got in, approximately how much, plus whether your car has been turned over. The responses settle whatever happens next.

The high-pressure fuel pump did that morning run running on a fuel that had lost a lot of the protection it is built around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of the fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So picture a diesel Renault Megane, topped up at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked sitting outside Beccles until you realise close to eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that altered plenty, which is why the question we ask is about miles instead of time. Phone us. Keep the car exactly where it is.

Shift the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later — that's what somebody will say, and it's wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags at Ellingham VC Primary School, a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series is a nuisance and nothing worse. Started three more times for courtesy, it is no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, as priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes through the fuel filter toward your pump. Let people grumble. Call us.

Here's what a job in the car park by the pub in the village normally looks like. We arrive at your car, ask what got in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since — those three replies decide most of the work. Then the polluted mixture comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable one. Clean diesel goes in and the fuel system is bled. Then our engineers fire it up, check it runs correctly, and you pull away.

A car you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anyone sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the quantity of petrol getting to your injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck accepts the smaller petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, so unfamiliar locations see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, close to Ellingham Village Sign or not, and we'll get to the Mercedes E-Class.

By now that tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and the blend goes into the filter, into the fuel lines, into your pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that got close to Saint Mary's Church wants its system cleared. Draining isn't the same thing.

At a forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

Most of this job starts at a pump, which means a big chunk of that is finished there. The drain normally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the station's agreement, that's a place our technicians work, and often.

No place other than a garage can the mistake be halted with the engine still cold. Our technicians can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and driven there, and that drew fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Clear of the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you roll it. Well worth doing. Firing it over four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Places our team serve around Kirby Cane

Ellingham, Kirby Row, West End, Kirby Green, Dockeney — all of these on our trips that bring us over to Kirby Cane too, a rural village.

Not on that list? That says nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and nearly all towns across Norfolk have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Ring us and check rather than assuming — borders especially, and anywhere a satnav can misread.

This map shows the ground the page covers. We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and the car doesn't need to travel to us.

Stopped on the kerbside somewhere around Kirby Cane?

Some people get no sensible spot to pull in at all. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Mill Road as you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Whether you remain beside the car or move away from it turns on whether staying nearby is safe. Do not start it up to reach a safer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into the system. However inconvenient the place, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that's much better for your car than carrying on.

Run it already? Stop, and check this

The M11 is the road that counts here, and it lies over 50 miles from Kirby Cane. A misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are generally lost power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in our van.

Kirby Cane itself

Kirby Cane is a small village in south Norfolk, situated near the River Waveney and close to the villages of Ellingham and Kirby Row. Kirby Cane has a low elevation of around 7 metres above sea level, and its landscape is characteristic of the Norfolk countryside. Kirby Cane remains a quiet, rural community with a mix of old and new housing, predominantly detached homes.

What comes next when our engineers reach you in Kirby Cane

  • The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
  • That tank gets emptied completely.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • We start the engine and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

After that it is ready to set off. Our technicians do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been noticed early, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

Kirby Cane AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

Never fire it up: that opening instruction stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Kirby Cane has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. We cover both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Kirby Cane

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page truthfully, since the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much your tank takes.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for our van.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run. If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Kirby Cane drivers

I am on a forecourt in Kirby Cane. Can you drain it here?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the station's agreement we visit The Co-operative and the other forecourts locally routinely.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. It is recoverable much more regularly than people assume, even though driving is what moves the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different problem and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and your car, still together?

Do not switch your engine on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car afterwards. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than motorists fear.

Call-out fuel draining around Kirby Cane and throughout Norfolk — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
