Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Knave-Go-By? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Knave-Go-By and the remainder of Cornwall. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When your engine has not turned over and the fuel is still inside that tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Our technicians can tell you what your next stage will be. Contact us — this happens ahead of everything else.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it. Turned on anyway? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car usually will not run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away happily, for a few miles. Drivers get that muddled. It is not all right — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off as well — switch it on and you frequently prime that system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for precisely those parts.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel tipped on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not moved is the quickest one to sort, and we would much rather drive to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Mount Pleasure, put those hazards on and leave the car there.
  • Before you phone, work out your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts TR14 9 — that is what settles whether our van turns up or circles.
  • What got in, about how much, and also if the car has fired — those three details determine the whole call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel on a forecourt?

Much of the work starts at a forecourt, so a big part of it is done there. We work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement, so if you're still at Tesco that is generally where this drain takes place.

Before the engine has started — a forecourt is the only setting the mistake is spotted. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key.

Push it out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Knave-Go-By

Car parks like the one outside Tesco are a place we work in all the time, and the fuel is rarely the awkward part. That bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit on the way in that determines if our van can get to you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you ring, and which way the vehicle is facing. If our engineers can't work beside your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan we'll roll it without starting it — and that isn't fussiness about a handful of seconds of running. Each start primes your fuel system and sucks more of the mixture out of your tank and on to the pump, so a car shuffled twice into a better bay has silently turned into a worse job than one left just where it stopped.

What our technicians will ask is if the run there was brief and cold, because that's where petrol is least able to burn correctly — and anything that does not burn can work past the rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Peugeot 308 standing in the car park by Beacon Inn with a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing degrades as it sits, and so leave the car overnight then call us in the morning.

Your pump isn't turning, and so whatever your diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Grenville Gardens Recreation Ground, none of it is going on now. Nothing gets worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but do not drive the car home to buy any.

A car you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anyone spots anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what settles the volume of petrol getting to your injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck takes the slimmer petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, and so unfamiliar spots see most of these. Call us from wherever you are, close to Winding Engine House or not, and we will come to the Ford Kuga.

What takes place next is the trouble. The motor at once draws the petrol still resting in your filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put new diesel in, someone sure of themselves will tell you — and that advice is half true, since do it to a diesel Citroen C3 parked up, Chimney say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Call us instead. Our technicians flush your circuit and take the filter off where your vehicle has a working one, and that's the difference between the car being repaired and the car just starting.

Coverage in Knave-Go-By

Higher Condurrow, Killivose, Pengegon, Troon, Camborne — all of these on the rounds that carry us across to Knave-Go-By too, a rural village.

If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for most places around Cornwall, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours. Close to the boundary, or somewhere the satnav can't find? Contact us to check instead of guessing.

The patch the page includes appears on our map. All of that is ground our technicians serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not drive the car anywhere.

Stranded at the roadside in Knave-Go-By

Not everybody gets a sensible spot to stop. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Meadow View since you realised after setting off — we take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Clear of the motor when it isn't safe to be in it, by it when it is. Never fire up your engine to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the fuel system. We'll take the van to a tricky spot without any trouble, and for the car that's a lot better than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has travelled

over 50 miles out of Knave-Go-By, the local M5 is what counts now. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the first junction that is sensible, stop there, and don't restart it to move it. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you phone. It alters what we bring.

Knave-Go-By is a village in Cornwall, situated inland at an elevation of 133 metres, and is located near the cities of Truro and the surrounding villages of Higher Condurrow, Killivose, and Pengegon. Knave-Go-By has a population of approximately 943 residents, who mostly reside in detached houses. Knave-Go-By is about 11.3 miles from Truro, the nearest city, and is around 242.5 miles from London.

What we do when our engineers get to you in Knave-Go-By

  • Our technicians find out what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
  • Out flows the contaminated mixture.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • When it's turned on, our engineers confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves the car ready to pull away. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Knave-Go-By

The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits in its place.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Knave-Go-By has its own page with the detail — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

Knave-Go-By pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what moves it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach your car and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it is not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Knave-Go-By

At a petrol station around Knave-Go-By, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this takes place. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. It is salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists assume, even though driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. The pump still has to live with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Don't turn the engine back on.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then let it stay that way. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
