Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Knights End?

With your tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet turned over, almost every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes straight after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. Across Knights End and the rest of Cambridgeshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Call us before everything else happens, so you'll learn what follows from there.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Never start the car. Started anyway? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run, and so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that muddled. It is not fine — that fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition stays off as well — flick it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those components.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up clears nothing — it simply leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We'd sooner come to a difficult location than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to handle than a motor that has never moved. On the verge on Knight's End Road, that means hazards on and keep it.
  • A van arriving rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting PE15 9, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you call.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how much, and also whether your car has fired. Those three answers determine the full job.

On a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where this work mostly begins, and where a large part of that closes. Still at Gulf? Then that is typically where it happens. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the owner.

Before your engine has run — a garage is the one location this gets caught. Fuel pulled out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is started and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the lines as well as your tank. That's still not a calamity, and we sort it out where your car stands. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

The attendants will usually help you move the vehicle out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Cranking it over four car lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Knights End

Diesel Nissan Qashqai. A few litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Turned off now, at Lidl. That is the call our technicians like, as the point under it's about amount through your pump not hours on the clock.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both prepared. Your Audi A4 will have felt perfectly normal on the way back from Burrowmoor Primary Academy — they all do, and that's the trap. Diesel into a petrol vehicle mostly won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, pulls away like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the protection the fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, since behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

Chance the drive home from The Seven Stars? No. It will start and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the problem — a diesel on a diluted tank acts generally while wearing down the components your fuel should be lubricating. Park the BMW 1 Series then phone.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and left the diesel Citroen C3 up near St Wendreda's a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Call us and leave the car off. The short hop really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so diluted fuel has reached the fuel filter and the pump — which is why our engineers flush the lines rather than only draining your tank.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, your idle turned uneven, and the diesel Mercedes GLC is now resting by Trinity Church. That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure properly not your engine giving up — and because there's no warning for it, cars in that position usually get driven again before anybody rings. Do not. Turn it off and ring us.

Areas our team cover near Knights End

Knights End is a residential suburb, and so our vans head out to it and to the villages near it on the same journeys: Town End, Little London, March, Eastwood End and Badgeney.

There are separate pages for most locations across Cambridgeshire, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list tells you nothing at all about whether our technicians come. Close to the boundary, or anywhere your satnav gets wrong? Contact us to check instead of presuming.

This map shows the patch this page covers. All of that is ground we serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not bring your car anywhere.

Knights End: stranded wherever you stopped

The chance to pull over anywhere sensible does not come to everyone. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Isle of Ely Way since you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the normal kind.

Whether you remain with the vehicle or stand away from it turns on whether staying nearby feels safe. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to get to somewhere better and that blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. Driving on causes the car far more harm than a van driving out to a difficult location, and that is no trouble for us.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 25 miles from Knights End, the local A1(M) is what counts here. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Do not start it to move it. Come off at the first sensible exit and turn off. Assume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our engineers bring changes.

About Knights End

Knights End is a small suburban area in Cambridgeshire, situated inland at a low elevation of around 5 metres. Knights End lies near the city of Ely, approximately 12 miles away, and is also close to other nearby places such as Town End and Little London. Knights End is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its residential nature. Knights End is located about 71 miles from London, making it a relatively distant commuter location.

When our engineers get to you in Knights End: what happens

  • Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Your tank is emptied of everything.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Once it is fired up, our technicians confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Knights End AdBlue removal is a different problem

Don't fire it up: that opening step applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue in its place.

AdBlue removal around Knights End has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. Our technicians handle both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Knights End

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much that tank can hold.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a van.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. If it's not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Knights End

I'm on a forecourt in Knights End. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it's where a large part of this work happens. Our technicians work at Jet and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more often than motorists assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. The pump still has to put up with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Keep it shut off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
