Knockroon: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With that tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet started, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Knockroon and the rest of East Ayrshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. One ring our way is plenty: our engineers can tell you what comes after this. Make this straight away.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- Do not fire it up. Fired up anyway? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually cannot run, so the motorist stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for a couple of miles. Drivers get that backwards. It isn't okay — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: turning it on is usually enough to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.
- Never water down it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
- Stay still if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Pottery Row, anywhere — a difficult spot for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a car that never shifted.
- Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning KA18 1, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
- Three facts settle the whole visit: the liquid you put in, the approximate quantity involved, and if anything has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.
At the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel
A good share of the job is finished at a forecourt, because that's where it often kicks off. We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, and so if you're still at JET that's generally where this drain gets done.
Nowhere else except a forecourt can it be spotted with the engine still cold. Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for your key are what settle that.
Out from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you move the vehicle. Very much worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.
Coverage near Knockroon
The Rigg, Holmhead, Cumnock, Auchinleck, Back Rogerton — all of these on our journeys that carry us out to Knockroon itself, a residential suburb.
There are pages for most towns across East Ayrshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off the list means nothing about whether our engineers come. Presuming is the habit to skip, especially on the border or anywhere the satnav goes wrong. Ring us to check.
This map shows the ground this page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground we cover, and none of it requires the vehicle to move to us.
Twenty to nine. At the gates of the local primary school. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Turn your hazards on, leave the ignition alone, and ring us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Peugeot 3008 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered to demand, and a drive taken in a rush needs a great deal of that.
Never risk it. The trip home from Boswell Arms is quite possible, which is exactly the problem — a thinned tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the parts your fuel is meant to protect. Ring us, then let the Mercedes E-Class stay where it stands.
Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Whatever the diesel Vauxhall Astra did on the way to Knockroon Wood, it is doing none of it now: your pump isn't turning. So take your time — but do not drive it home to buy yourself any.
Rarely the problem, the spot. On-street is the usual spot our technicians work, and a narrow parking space is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you phone from near Terringzean Castle, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can stand next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Ford Kuga gets cleared, your filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the fuel lines purged and fresh fuel put through the whole circuit — because by now the worst of that is in the lines, not the tank.
The narrower petrol nozzle fits a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than slapdash. Strange spots see most of it for that reason. So: filled up by Visions Leisure Centre without thinking, in a diesel BMW X1 you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody notices, and distance decides how much petrol gets to the injectors.
Kerbside stops across Knockroon
The chance to pull in anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody. Set off, then noticed? Landed along the verge of The Kirk's Alarm, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.
Clear of the vehicle when it isn't safe to sit there, beside it if it is. Do not fire up the engine to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mix further into the system. Pressing on causes the car far more harm than a technician driving out to an inconvenient place, and that's no problem for us.
Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has travelled
The local M77 is the one that counts here, and lies under 15 miles from Knockroon. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.
Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and never start the car to move it. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.
A little about Knockroon
Knockroon is a suburban area situated on the riverside in East Ayrshire, with a mix of detached housing and a relatively small population of around 1337 residents. Knockroon sits at an elevation of 149 metres, near the communities of The Rigg, Holmhead, and Cumnock. Knockroon is located approximately 28 miles from Glasgow, making it a commuter base for the city. Knockroon's riverside setting provides a scenic backdrop to the area.
Our call-out in Knockroon, step by step
- Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
- The polluted fuel comes from the tank.
- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that started the issue.
- The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
- Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
That leaves your car ready to pull away. Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Knockroon?
Don't crank it: that opening rule stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and deposits.
Both are ours. There is a separate Knockroon page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Knockroon
One figure would not be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether a technician can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.
The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel questions from Knockroon drivers
Fuel drains on a Knockroon petrol station forecourt
Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.
Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?
It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and keep it off. Driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more frequently than people assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
It is not an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.
Waiting next to it?
Do not turn the engine back on.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. A stationary, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists fear.
