Petrol in a Diesel Car in Knowl

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Knowl and the rest of West Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While your engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still in your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Just one call to us will be enough: our engineers shall tell you what happens after this. Try this right away.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up — and never believe it if it runs. That is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor given diesel normally just won't run, and so the person stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and pulls away quite happily for a few miles. It isn't fine. It's wearing the fuel system as you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition remains off too — flick it on and you commonly prime the system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for exactly those parts.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so never pour diesel on top to water down it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, so remain where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on The Knowl? Hazards on, and keep the car there. A tricky spot suits us better than a started motor.
  • The van turning up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning WF14 9, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you ring.
  • Three details settle the full job: the stuff you poured in, the rough amount involved, and whether anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Draining petrol from your diesel on a forecourt

The work kicks off at a forecourt, usually. Regularly the work finishes at one as well. Still at Shell? Then that is normally where it takes place. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the station.

At a forecourt, it gets caught with the motor never started, and no place else does that. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it is. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

The staff will generally happily wheel the vehicle away from the pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing. Shifting it four spaces doesn't warrant firing it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Knowl

If you've put petrol in the diesel Mercedes E-Class in Knowl and you are now stuck at Co-op Food with a boot packed with shopping, phone us. Don't crank it again to leave that bay. Our technicians will get to you, empty that tank, purge the fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at gentle throttle draws little diesel, which is why such jobs are often the straightforward cases.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and mostly it won't run, and so the driver stops there and the harm stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing starts, ticks over and drives off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be giving. That is the trap, and it is why your diesel Vauxhall Astra will have seemed perfectly ordinary coming back from Battyeford CofE (VC) Primary School. They always do. From behind the wheel there's nothing to caution you about, so nothing alerts you. Phone us with approximately how far you travelled, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the vehicle stands, as a diesel Ford Kuga left at Knowl Park is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

A throttle gone limp, white smoke, a lumpy idle, knocking: that is a misfuelled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what is wrong. Do not restart the car to find a better spot — switch off where you have stopped, near Mirfield Community Centre or anywhere else.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle ragged, and the diesel Volkswagen Polo is parked up near St Aidan's. Your engine is not failing — that deadness is fuel that won't build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so cars like yours usually get driven again before anybody picks up the phone. Don't. Off, then call us.

Knowl and the villages near it

Knowl is a residential suburb, so we head out to the town and to the places by it on those same runs: Snake Hill, Stocks Bank, New Scarboro, Littlemoor and Mirfield.

Not on the list? That says nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all locations across West Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Guessing is the mistake to avoid, above all on the boundary or somewhere a satnav struggles. Phone and enquire.

That map is the ground the page spans. We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and the vehicle never needs to travel to us.

Roadside breakdowns in Knowl

The chance to stop somewhere safe does not fall to everyone. Set off, then twigged? Landed on the verge on York Grove, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Sit with the car while it is wise to be inside, yet clear of it if it is not. Never fire it up to get to a nicer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mixture deeper into your fuel system. We will bring our van to a difficult spot without any trouble, and for the car that is much better than carrying on.

Run it already? Stop, then check below

Here is where the M62 comes in — under 3 miles from Knowl. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Get off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our technicians bring alters.

A bit about Knowl

Knowl is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of around 85 metres. Knowl lies approximately 8 miles from Bradford and is part of the larger urban area surrounding the city. Knowl has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are particularly prevalent in the area. Knowl is also close to other nearby places such as Snake Hill and Stocks Bank.

Our job in Knowl, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies change what the work really is.
  • The polluted fuel comes from that tank.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that caused the issue.
  • We pour fresh diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • We fire it up and confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and because all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a workshop.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Knowl

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — don't start the car — yet this fault isn't. The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal in Knowl has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Knowl?

What shifts the figure is set out below, since this job is not one job and we can't frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank holds.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a technician.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Knowl drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt around Knowl. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the station's agreement our technicians work at Esso and the other forecourts around town all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. What settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. It is recoverable a lot more commonly than drivers expect, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. The pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Keep the engine switched off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
