Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Knowle Hill?

Don't turn on the motor. While the fuel is still inside the tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Knowle Hill and the rest of Surrey, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Our technicians can explain what the next move will be. Call us — this comes ahead of all else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Whenever you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. This is why you never start the vehicle, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point people get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it burns it protects — that high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: turning it on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into just those parts.
  • Never water down it. Diesel tipped on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Knowle Hill? Hazards on, then keep it there. An awkward location suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Have your whereabouts prepared before you call. A postcode starting GU25 4 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van turning up and the van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, approximately how many litres, and if the engine has started. These three facts determine the full job.

Clearing petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

Pumps are where the job usually kicks off, and where a good portion of that closes. If you're still on the forecourt at Shell, that's generally where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement.

At the forecourt, this gets stopped with the motor never run, and nowhere else manages it. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the car. Well worth doing. Moving it four bays does not merit firing it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Knowle Hill

Easy, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at easy throttle draws very little of it. Petrol into a diesel BMW 3 Series somewhere around Knowle Hill, a boot full of shopping, and you stranded outside Waitrose — phone us. Exiting the space is not worth a restart. The tank gets cleared where it sits, the fuel lines purged, new diesel in, and you head home.

Somebody will urge you to move the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A4 on the zig-zags at Trumps Green Infant School is an inconvenience; the same car started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and drags more petrol through your filter and into the pump. Leave it there, let people grumble, then phone us.

Do not risk it. The trip home from the pub in the village is quite possible, which is exactly the trouble — a diluted tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the components the fuel is meant to lubricate. Ring us, then let the Mercedes C-Class stay where it sits.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you call us — some contracts want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it later on. Then call us about the Peugeot 208 close to British Legion, and don't worry that you can't say how full the tank was. Almost nobody can, in a car they picked up two days ago, and our technicians work it out on site. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mix, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

No warning light exists for this, which is why motors in that position generally get driven a second time before anybody phones. Don't be one of them. The throttle went soft and your idle turned lumpy after a few streets, and the diesel Citroen C3 is now waiting by Harvesttime Church. Sluggishness there means fuel that can't build pressure fully instead of a motor packing up. Switch off. Phone us.

Knowle Hill and the towns next to it

Knowle Grove, Harpesford, Trumps Green, Virginia Water, Longcross — each of these on the runs that carry us over to Knowle Hill too, a residential suburb.

There are pages for the majority of towns in Surrey, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list means nothing at all about if we come. Ring us and ask instead of guessing — county lines particularly, and wherever your satnav may get wrong.

The ground the page includes is on our map. The lot is ground our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't drive your car anywhere.

Knowle Hill: stranded where you stopped

The chance to pull in somewhere safe does not come to everyone. Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge on Knowle Grove Close, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Out of the motor if it's not safe to sit in it, with it if it is. Don't start it up to reach a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mix deeper into your fuel system. However inconvenient the location, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that's much better for your car than pressing on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where your M3 comes into it — under a mile away from Knowle Hill. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first exit that's safe, pull up there, and do not start the vehicle to move it. Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you call. What we bring changes.

A little about Knowle Hill

Knowle Hill is a suburban area in Surrey, situated inland at an elevation of 63 metres, approximately 20.9 miles from London. Knowle Hill is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting the area's residential nature. Knowle Hill is close to nearby places such as Knowle Grove, Harpesford, and Trumps Green, and is part of the wider commuter belt around London.

When our engineers reach you around Knowle Hill: what happens

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.
  • The polluted mixture is drawn out of your tank.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what started the issue, so the fuel lines get purged and your filter cleaned.
  • Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and prime the system.
  • It's run with new diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running properly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Knowle Hill is a different matter

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is the same — do not start the vehicle — yet the issue is not. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits instead.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Knowle Hill page. Both are ours to deal with.

Knowle Hill costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What moves the figure is set out below, because the job is not one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Knowle Hill

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Knowle Hill?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done. Regularly, provided the site agrees: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer on the spot.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run counts a lot more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more commonly than drivers fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

No. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

You, and the car, still together?

Keep the engine turned off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
