Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Knowle Top?

If you have not started the engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a car requires while the petrol is still in your tank and the engine has not yet turned over, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Knowle Top or the rest of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Contact us and our engineers will explain what happens after that before you do much else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Don't start it. Fired up anyway? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically cannot run, and so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for several miles. People get that backwards. It's not all right — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Turning your ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition off.
  • Don't dilute it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and we would rather drive to an odd location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Uppergate Road, switch those hazards on then keep it there.
  • Our van showing up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting S6 6, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you dial.
  • What got in, roughly how many litres, and if the motor has fired — the three details settle your whole job. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

At the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

It starts at a forecourt, mostly. Often enough the work ends at one as well. Still at JET? Then that's generally where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the site.

At the forecourt, this is stopped with your engine never run, and nowhere else does that. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is started and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines as well as that tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians deal with it where the car is. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Move the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that's worth doing. Starting it to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Knowle Top

Car parks like the one at Spar are a place our technicians visit frequently, and the fuel is seldom the complicated part. The bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit on the way in that determines if a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you call, and which way your car is pointing. If our engineers cannot work alongside your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan we will move the vehicle without firing it — and that isn't fussiness about a handful of seconds of running. Every start primes the fuel system and pulls more of that blend out of the tank and toward the pump, so a vehicle moved twice into a better bay has silently become a harder job than one left precisely where it stopped.

Your diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt entirely ordinary on the way back from Stannington Infant School. They do, and that is the snag with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol car and it usually will not run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure pump works without the protection the fuel is supposed to be giving. Nothing warns you, as from behind the wheel there is nothing to caution you about. Phone with approximately how far you drove and how hard you pushed it; the second one matters more than the first.

Out there normal, back sluggish. If that was the trip to Stannington Park, look at the tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the tight clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every further mile the diesel Mercedes C-Class covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, switch off, ring us.

Why so direct about leaving your keys alone? Because the pump is upstream of the injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it sheds downstream with the fuel. Call us. Leave the BMW X1 by Stannington Library.

Unfamiliar locations are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical instead of careless: the smaller petrol nozzle slides into a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up near Stannington War Memorial without thinking, in a diesel Citroen C3 you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody realises, and miles is what decides how much petrol ends up at your injectors.

Will our technicians serve your end of Knowle Top?

As a residential suburb, Knowle Top sees a steady visit, whilst the areas close by go with it on the same trip: Park Side and Nethergate, Park Head and Stannington, Town End.

There are separate pages for nearly all locations across South Yorkshire, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing about whether we come. Contact us and ask instead of assuming, particularly if you're on the boundary or anywhere the satnav can't find.

This map marks the area this page covers. The car never needs to move to us. We work throughout all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded at the roadside somewhere in Knowle Top?

Not everybody has a chance to pull in anywhere sensible. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Knowle Close as you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Whether you wait by the motor or keep away from it turns on if being nearby feels wise. Never restart the engine to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into the system. However awkward the location, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than driving on.

Run it already? Stop, and read below

The M1 is the one which counts now, and runs under 10 miles from Knowle Top. A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are normally lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Take the first junction that's sensible, stop there, and don't start the car to move it. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you call. What our technicians bring changes.

Once we arrive with you in Knowle Top: what happens

  • We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
  • The tainted fuel is drawn out of your tank.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that started the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Once it is started, we make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away. Our technicians do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, it's very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Knowle Top?

Never start it: that opening step stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Knowle Top page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Knowle Top

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page truthfully, because this job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Knowle Top motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station in Knowle Top, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this happens. We attend Esso and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. What determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the car off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more regularly than people assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct fault and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and the car, still together?

Leave the car turned off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
