Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Kylepark? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Kylepark and the rest of South Lanarkshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When the motor has not yet been started and the fuel is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. One call to us will be plenty: our engineers will show you what follows after this. Try that first.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for several miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't fire it up. And once started, do not believe it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you often prime your system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for exactly those components.
  • Do not pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it just leaves you a larger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort, and our team would much rather get to a difficult place than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Kylepark Crescent, turn those hazards on then keep it there.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts G71 7, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
  • Three facts shape your whole call-out: the liquid you poured in, the rough measure of it, and if it has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at a forecourt?

Forecourts are where this job mostly begins, and where a good chunk of it ends. Still at Gulf? Then that's normally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the site.

A filling station is the single location this gets halted before your motor has run. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and your lines along with your tank. That is still not a disaster, and we sort it out where the vehicle stands. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Worth it. Rolling the car four bays does not warrant cranking it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Kylepark

Will we reach your corner of Kylepark?

Calderbraes, Uddingston, Birkenshaw, Tannochside, Newton — every one of those on our trips that carry us across to Kylepark too, a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for most places across South Lanarkshire, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off that list tells you nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. Ring us and check rather than guessing — boundaries especially, and anywhere a satnav might get wrong.

The map marks the area this page covers. The vehicle never needs to come to us. Our technicians work over every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Nothing alerts you, since from the driver's seat there is nothing to be warned about. The diesel Skoda Octavia will have felt entirely usual on the way back from the local primary school, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car generally refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, ticks over, drives off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump does its work without the lubrication its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us roughly how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

A diesel BMW 3 Series parked in the car park at Angels with a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up till somebody takes it home. Park the car there overnight then ring us first thing. Nothing deteriorates as it waits. What our technicians will ask is whether that run there was short and cold, since that is where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and whatever does not burn can get past the rings then into the engine oil.

Our engineers rinse the lines rather than only emptying that tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already got to the fuel filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Dacia Duster parked up close to Uddingston Sports Centre a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Call us then leave it off.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres waiting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mixture knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Nearly nobody knows how full that tank was in a vehicle collected two days ago, and our technicians work that out there. Do phone the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to approve the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then phone us about the Mercedes E-Class near Clydeway Golf Range.

By this point the tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, the blend is in the filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 208 that got by St John the Baptist needs your system flushed, not cleared.

Roadside stops across Kylepark

Some people have no safe place to pull over whatsoever. A routine call for us and not an unusual one: worked out after setting off, finished up along the verge beside Priory Drive or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Out of your car if it isn't wise to wait there, by it when it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the catch: restart the car to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. However difficult the spot, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has travelled

Your M74 is the road that counts here, and sits under a mile from Kylepark. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. It alters what our technicians bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

A little about Kylepark

Kylepark is a suburban area situated on the riverside in South Lanarkshire, with a relatively low elevation of 18 metres. Kylepark lies close to the nearby settlements of Calderbraes, Uddingston, and Birkenshaw, and is approximately 6 miles from Glasgow. Kylepark has a population of around 1999 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.

What happens when our technicians arrive with you around Kylepark

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Your tank gets drained completely.
  • Our engineers flush the lines and clear the filter, so what is left in the fuel system is not what created the trouble.
  • Our technicians pour fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running properly.

From that point, you are ready to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Kylepark?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — while the fault underneath it is a separate one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Kylepark has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Kylepark

Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much that tank holds.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely get to your car and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Kylepark

At a petrol station around Kylepark, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's permission we visit BP and the other forecourts locally regularly.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the engine has run counts far more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more often than people fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, since our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Still with your car?

Never switch your engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
