Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lambourn? Don't Start It
Don't start your engine. While the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not been started, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, all over Lambourn and the remainder of Berkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Ring us before anything else starts, and you will learn what follows from there.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do now
- Don't fire it up. Started all the same? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run, and so the person stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for several miles. People get that confused. It is not fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
- Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it protects — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition alone as well: turning it on is often enough to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into just those parts.
- Never dilute it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.
- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A car that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort out, and we'd sooner travel to an odd spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Newbury Street, turn your hazards on and leave it there.
- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning RG17 8, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of arriving.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, approximately how many litres, plus if the motor has started. These three details determine the whole job.
Draining petrol from the diesel on the forecourt
A good share of this work gets finished at the pump, since that is where it often starts. The drain typically takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the owner's agreement, that's somewhere our engineers work, and regularly.
Nowhere except the forecourt can the mistake be halted with your motor still unstarted. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where it is. It does mean the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key.
The staff will usually help you move the vehicle out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.
The tricky part is that bay, not your fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height bar on the way in that determines whether a technician can reach you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one at Co-op Food, say how much space there's round you and which way round the vehicle is. Those our technicians attend frequently. Should there be no space to work beside your diesel Renault Megane, it gets rolled with the engine off, and not out of fussiness over a couple of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the blend leaves that tank for your pump, and two shunts into a better space have quietly made a harder job of what was merely a car standing still.
You'll be told to move it out of the gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags at Lambourn CofE Primary School, a misfuelled Skoda Octavia running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Fire it up three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes your lines, every prime draws more petrol through the filter towards the pump. Let them grumble. Phone.
Risk the drive home from The George? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will move off quite happily, which is the issue — a diesel on a diluted tank acts normally while grinding the parts your fuel should be lubricating. Park the Audi A4 then phone.
Nothing gets worse while it stands. Whatever the diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Mill Lane Recreation Ground, it is doing none of it now: the pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the car home to buy yourself any.
Hire car or company car? Call them before you call us — some agreements want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it afterwards. Then call us about the Citroen C3 by Lambourn Library, and don't worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Almost no one can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out on the spot. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mix, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.
Service near Lambourn
Lambourn is a village, so our team are out to the town and to the places near it on the usual journeys: Upper Lambourn, Sheepdrove, Mile End, Eastbury and Lambourn Woodlands.
Not on that list? That says nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and nearly all locations in Berkshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Close to the boundary, or anywhere your satnav struggles with? Phone and check rather than assuming.
That map shows the ground this page includes. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of that is territory we serve, and none of that requires your car to travel to us.
Stuck by the roadside around Lambourn
Some drivers get no suitable place to pull in whatsoever. Set off, then realised? Ended up on the verge beside Market Place, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.
Fine there? Remain with it. Not okay? Climb out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. Our van driving to a tricky spot is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for your car than driving on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
The M4 is the road which matters here, and lies under 3 miles from Lambourn. Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.
Pull off at the next safe exit, turn off, and do not restart it to move it. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you call. What our technicians bring changes.
Lambourn itself
Lambourn is a village situated in the valley of the River Lambourn in Berkshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Lambourn sits at an elevation of around 130 metres, near the villages of Upper Lambourn and Sheepdrove. Lambourn is located near the city of Oxford, approximately 20 miles to the north, and is about 60 miles west of London. Lambourn has a population of around 2782 people, living in a variety of housing types, predominantly semi-detached homes.
The visit around Lambourn, step by step
- Our engineers establish what went in, how much, and if your motor has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
- The tank gets emptied of everything.
- Our engineers rinse the lines and clean the filter, and so what is left in the system is not what caused the problem.
- Our technicians pour fresh diesel in and prime your system.
- Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.
From that point, you're ready to drive away. We do all of this wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been spotted quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Lambourn is a different matter
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine remains off — while this issue under it's a distinct one altogether. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up instead.
Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Lambourn has its own page with the detail — including why it's often the more significant of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Lambourn
Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what varies it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much that tank takes.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel: common questions in Lambourn
At a petrol station in Lambourn, can you do a fuel drain there?
Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. We visit JET and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?
Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and leave it off. Driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more commonly than motorists assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct fault and it does not restore what petrol has diluted. Afterwards? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.
Still with the vehicle?
Shut off is how the car remains.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
