Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Langho? Don't Start It

If you have not started your engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still in the tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Langho or the rest of Lancashire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Just one call our way will be plenty: our technicians will tell you what happens next. Do it right away.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Fired up regardless? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically can't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for a few miles. Motorists get that confused. It is not okay — your fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition stays off also — turn it on and you usually prime your system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for exactly those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes — so do not pour diesel on top to thin it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd rather get to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a vehicle that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Whinney Lane, that means hazards on and keep it.
  • Before you ring, have your position. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning BB6 8 — that is what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • What got in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the car has fired — these three answers determine the full visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel on a forecourt?

It starts at a pump, typically. Quite often the work wraps up at one too. If you are still on the forecourt at Gulf, that's usually where the drain takes place — we operate on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent.

The forecourt is the only place the mistake gets spotted before the engine has run. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys.

Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that's worth doing. Cranking it just for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Langho

Easy, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at light throttle uses very little fuel. Petrol into a diesel Nissan Qashqai somewhere in Langho, a boot full of shopping, and you stranded at Co-op Food — call us. Getting out of the space is never worth another start. The tank gets emptied where it stands, the lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and you get home.

Nothing alerts you, because from behind the wheel there is nothing to be warned about. The diesel Mercedes C-Class will have felt entirely ordinary on the way back from St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School, Langho, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle mostly refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, ticks over, pulls away as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump works without the protection its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

Three replies determine much of the work: what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we get to your car in the car park outside Petre Arms. After that the tainted blend comes out of your tank, your lines are flushed, and where your Audi A3 has a replaceable filter, it comes off. Once new diesel is in and your system primed, our technicians start the engine and confirm it runs smoothly before you drive away.

Why we're direct about not driving on: your pump sits ahead of your injectors, so whatever a worn pump gives off passes downstream with your fuel. Leave the Vauxhall Astra near Saint Marys then ring us.

Drain it then put fresh diesel in — that is the advice you will get, normally from somebody confident, and it's only half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Volvo XC60 close to Billington and Langho Community Centre and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound reasonable. What takes place next is the problem: the motor straight away draws the petrol left resting in the fuel filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead. Our technicians flush your circuit and take your filter off where the car has a working one, which is the difference between the car being fixed and the car simply starting.

Langho plus the areas beside it

Those same trips get us to York, Old Langho, Dinckley, Brockhall Village and Wilpshire besides Langho, which is a rural village.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all towns around Lancashire, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours. Contact us and ask rather than guessing — borders above all, and wherever your phone might misread.

The map shows the ground the page spans. Every bit of it is territory our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive the car anywhere.

Kerbside call-outs across Langho

The chance to pull in somewhere sensible does not fall to everyone. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up on the verge on Moorland Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a common call for us rather than a rare one.

Stay with the car when it is safe to sit inside, and clear of it when it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However tricky the location, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for the car than driving on.

Run it already? Stop, then check this

This is where the local M65 comes in, under 5 miles away from Langho. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.

Never start it to move it. Come off at the first sensible junction and switch off. Long trip? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in our van.

Where's Langho?

Langho is a village in Lancashire, situated inland at an elevation of 102 metres, approximately 10.7 miles from Preston. Langho has a population of around 1039 people, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type. Langho is located near other places such as Old Langho and Dinckley, and is about 186.1 miles from London.

What follows when our technicians arrive with you around Langho

  • We check what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
  • The tank gets cleared of everything.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The engine is started and checked to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and since everything is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Langho

The fault isn't the same, though the opening rule is — do not start it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue instead.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal around Langho has its own page with the detail — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Langho

One price would not be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much that tank holds.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly get to your car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Langho

At a petrol station in Langho, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this takes place. Routinely, provided the site consents: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our technicians answer there and then.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. What decides how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through your fuel system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more regularly than people expect.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, as our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

Leave the car turned off.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
