Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Langlee? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on your engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor requires while the fuel is still in the tank and your engine has not run, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Langlee or the remainder of Scottish Borders, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. A single ring to us is plenty: we will tell you what follows from here. Do that first.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Never start the car — and never believe it when it fires up. That is the bit people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel generally just won't run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and drives off without complaint for a couple of miles. It is not all right. It is eating into your fuel system while you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it burns it protects — your high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: turning it on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into just those components.
  • Don't dilute it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Our team would sooner travel to an odd location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to handle than a motor that hasn't moved. On the verge on Melrose Road, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode beginning TD1 2, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, roughly how much, and if your car has started. Those three details settle your whole job.

Removing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

Forecourts are where the job usually begins, and where a fair chunk of it closes. We work on station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, so if you're still at Esso that's generally where the drain gets done.

A filling station is the one location this is stopped before the engine has started. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys.

The staff will generally help you roll it clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing. Firing it to roll four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Langlee

Car parks like the one outside Asda are a place our technicians work in all the time, and the fuel is hardly ever the complicated part. The bay is: cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height limit on the way in that settles whether our van can reach you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you phone, and which way the car is facing. When our technicians can't work next to the diesel BMW 3 Series we'll move the vehicle without firing it — and that's not pedantry about a handful of seconds of running. Any start primes the fuel system and draws more of the mix out of your tank and toward the pump, and so a vehicle shunted twice into a roomier spot has quietly turned into a worse job than one left precisely where it stopped.

You will be told to shift it clear of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. On the zig-zags by the local primary school, a wrongly fuelled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Start it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol beyond the filter towards your pump. Let them moan. Phone.

The components that should be getting lubricated are wearing instead, and your vehicle gives no sign of that: a diesel on a weakened tank fires up and moves off perfectly well. Risk the journey home from The Woodcutter? Not a chance. Phone and leave the Ford Focus where it is.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, parked close to Langlee Community Centre. For a diesel Mercedes E-Class whose engine has turned, that's about the best version there is. Phone us, then let it stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get rinsed and not just your tank cleared.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle uneven, and the diesel Vauxhall Astra is parked up by Home of Sir Walter Scott. Your engine isn't failing — that softness is fuel that won't build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, so cars like yours typically get driven once more before somebody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, then ring us.

Service near Langlee

Being a residential suburb, Langlee sees a frequent call, while the areas nearby come with it on that same trip: Netherdale and Galafoot, Lowood and Easter Langlee, Glenfield.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are separate pages for nearly all towns across Scottish Borders, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Assuming is the mistake to avoid, particularly on the boundary or somewhere your phone struggles. Phone to ask.

The patch the page spans is on the map. Your car does not need to move to us. We operate throughout all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded at the kerb anywhere around Langlee?

Not everyone gets a decent spot to pull in. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Marigold Drive since you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Remain by the vehicle while it is safe to wait inside, but clear of the car when it isn't. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere better and that blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. However tricky the place, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that is far better for your car than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where the M8 comes into it — under 50 miles away from Langlee. A misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are normally a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Don't restart it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible exit and turn off. Long drive? Anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it changes what goes in our van.

Langlee itself

Langlee is a suburban area situated on the riverside in the Scottish Borders, with a mix of flat housing and local amenities. Langlee sits at an elevation of 133 metres, near the nearby places of Netherdale, Galafoot, and Lowood. Langlee is located approximately 28.5 miles from Edinburgh, the nearest city, and is part of the wider Scottish Borders community. Langlee has a population of around 2745 residents, living in a variety of flat housing types.

Once we arrive with you around Langlee: what we do

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Our engineers clear that tank of all the tainted mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains later is not the thing that created the issue.
  • New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • The motor is fired up and tested to be sure it runs properly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

Langlee AdBlue removal is a distinct job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor stays off — while the fault under it is a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Langlee page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Langlee

Our technicians can't put one number on this page truthfully, because the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much your tank can hold.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel queries from Langlee drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Langlee?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this gets done. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Asda is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. It's recoverable far more often than motorists expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct issue and it does not put back what petrol has thinned. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and the car, still together?

Switched off is the way it stays.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than people assume.
