Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Langley?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Langley and the rest of Berkshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While the engine has not yet run and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Our engineers will explain what your next stage is. Phone — that happens ahead of anything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. That's why you don't crank it, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally will not run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it burns it protects — the high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off too: turning it on is commonly enough to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.
  • Do not weaken it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • We would sooner travel to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to sort out than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Spencer Road, that means hazards on and keep the car.
  • Before you ring, get your position. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts SL3 7 — that is what determines whether the technician turns up or circles.
  • Three facts shape your whole job: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate measure involved, and if anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

The trip back would roughly double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already sent a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Tiguan. So leave it where it is. Call us from the platform if that's simpler — nobody needs you standing over the car at the nearest station whilst our technicians work, and tonight trumps finding out on Monday.

Every start primes the fuel system and pulls more of that blend out of the tank and on to the pump — which is why a car shunted twice into a roomier space has quietly grown into a worse job than one left precisely where it stopped. So where we cannot work beside your diesel BMW 3 Series, our technicians shift the vehicle without firing it. None of that is fuss about a few seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Co-op Food we visit regularly, and the fuel is hardly ever the complicated part: the bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit at the entrance determining if a van gets to you at all. Tell us how penned in you are, and which way the vehicle points.

Every restart primes your lines and draws more petrol past the filter and into the pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags by Marish Primary School is an inconvenience, whereas the same vehicle restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Somebody will tell you to move the car out of that gateway and deal with it later. Don't. Leave it there, let people moan, then phone us.

This is what a job in the car park by Shamrock's typically looks like. Our engineers arrive at your car, ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since — those three replies decide most of the work. Then the tainted mixture comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get flushed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Dacia Duster has a serviceable one. Clean diesel goes in and the fuel system is primed. Then our technicians start the engine, confirm it runs properly, and you set off.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and left the diesel Ford Kuga up near Langley Library a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us and leave the car off. The short drive genuinely assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so thinned fuel has reached the fuel filter and the pump — which is why our technicians clean the lines rather than only clearing your tank.

Can petrol be taken out of a diesel at the forecourt?

Much of the job begins at the pump, so a fair chunk of that ends up completed there. The drain generally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the site's permission, that's somewhere our engineers work, and regularly.

At a forecourt, the mistake gets stopped with the engine never run, and nowhere else does it. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key.

Push it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they usually will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Cranking the car to shift four car lengths isn't.

Langley plus the places beside it

Being a residential suburb, Langley sees a frequent call, whilst the villages round about go with it on the same journey: Brands Hill and Sutton, Middle Green and Colnbrook, Upton.

Not on that list? That means nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all locations across Berkshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Ring us and ask instead of guessing — borders above all, and wherever your satnav tends to get wrong.

The map shows the ground this page covers. The vehicle never needs to travel to us. Our technicians work across all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Broken down at the kerbside around Langley

Not everybody gets the opportunity to pull in anywhere sensible. If you realised after setting off and finished up along the verge of Ryvers Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a common call for us instead of a rare one.

Clear of your car when it is not safe to be in it, beside it if it is. Never start it up to reach a safer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into the system. A technician driving to an awkward spot is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under a mile out of Langley, the M4 is what matters here. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and never restart it to move it. It alters what our engineers bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Langley itself

Langley is a suburban area in Berkshire, situated inland at an elevation of 28 metres, and is located approximately 18 miles from London. Langley is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing and is near to other local places such as Brands Hill, Sutton, and Middle Green. Langley has a population of around 10,471 residents and is close to the nearest city, Westminster. Langley is part of the wider South East region of England.

What we do when our technicians arrive with you around Langley

  • We establish what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • Our engineers empty your tank of all the tainted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • Our engineers put clean diesel in and bleed your system.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running correctly.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Langley

Do not crank it: that first instruction holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the system relies on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal around Langley has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Langley

One price would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for a technician.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Langley

I am on a forecourt in Langley. Can you drain it on the spot?

A large portion of this work happens there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been drawn through your fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable far more frequently than drivers assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a modification and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is the car still with you?

Keep the engine turned off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
