Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Langley? Don't Start It
With the tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes right after the fill-up, and not by the amount that went in. Across Langley and the remainder of West Midlands, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. A single ring our way will be enough: our team shall tell you what follows next. Try it right away.
The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- As you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. That's why you do not fire it up, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Leave the ignition off also. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates your high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is usually all it takes to prime your system, which moves the petrol out of the tank then into exactly those parts.
- Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies — so do not put diesel on top to thin it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- A vehicle that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, so stay where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Broad Street? Hazards on, and keep it there. An awkward place works for us better than a started engine.
- Before you ring, get your location. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting B69 4 — that is what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the car has been run. The answers decide everything that follows.
Don't drive it home. The commute has already sent a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Golf, and the journey back would about double it for no purpose at all. Phone us from the platform if that's quicker. Our engineers don't need you hovering over your car at Langley Green whilst our engineers get it done, and we would very much rather speak to you tonight than learn on Monday.
The complicated part is that bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height bar on the way in that settles if a van can reach you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one outside Asda, mention how much space there is about you and which way round your car is. Those our technicians cover frequently. Should there be no space to work beside the diesel BMW 3 Series, it gets rolled with the motor off, and not out of fuss over a few seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of that mixture exits that tank for your pump, and two shunts into a nicer bay have silently made a harder job of what was merely a vehicle sitting still.
Twenty to nine. By Langley Primary School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Turn the hazards on, leave the engine alone, then phone. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Nissan Qashqai or anything else — except that fuel is supplied to demand, and a dash taken in a rush needs a great deal of it.
Emptying the Mercedes E-Class, changing the fuel filter where there's a serviceable one, cleaning the fuel lines, putting fresh fuel through the whole system: that's this job, and it is shaped by the worst of that waiting in your lines instead of in your tank by this point. Three things help when you call from near Past, Present and Future Sundial — which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and whether the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest spot our technicians work, and so the place itself is rarely the issue. A cramped parking spot beats a vehicle driven somewhere more handy.
A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle uneven, and your diesel Citroen C3 is parked up by Relocation of War Memorial. The engine is not giving up — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so motors like yours generally get driven once more before anybody picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, and call us.
Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel
Pumps are where the job often starts, and where a large part of that ends. If you're still on the forecourt at Asda, that's generally where the drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.
Nowhere except a garage can it be caught with your motor still untouched. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is started and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines as well as the tank. That is still not a calamity, and we sort it out where your car sits. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.
Staff will normally help out pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Accept the assistance. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.
Can we cover your side of Langley?
Those same trips bring us to Langley Green, Titford, Tat Bank, Causeway Green and Whiteheath Gate as well as Langley, which is a residential suburb.
There are separate pages for most locations around West Midlands, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether we come. Near the border, or somewhere your phone misreads? Contact us to check instead of presuming.
Check our map for the ground included here. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and your vehicle does not need to move to us.
Langley: stranded where you stopped
Not everyone has the opportunity to stop somewhere suitable. A common call for us and not an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up along the verge on Old Park Lane or in a lay-by with your hazards on.
Out of the vehicle when it's not wise to wait inside, beside it if it is. Never start it up to get to a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into the fuel system. However tricky the location, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is much better for the car than driving on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
Your M5 is the one that matters now, and it lies under a mile from Langley. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Come off at the first safe exit, turn off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition. Suppose the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 5 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.
Langley itself
Langley is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated lakeside with nearby places including Langley Green, Titford, and Tat Bank. Langley has a population of around 4682 people and is characterized by semi-detached housing. Langley sits at an elevation of 153 metres, approximately 4.8 miles from Birmingham and 105.2 miles from London. Langley is part of the larger West Midlands conurbation, with its residents benefiting from proximity to the region's amenities.
What we do when our engineers arrive with you in Langley
- Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
- The tank gets cleared completely.
- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later is not the thing that started the issue.
- Our engineers pour new diesel in and prime the system.
- Our engineers start the engine and confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.
After that it's ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed soon, and because everything is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a garage.
Langley AdBlue removal is a distinct job
The issue is not the same, though the first step is — do not start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the protection your fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.
We deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Langley has its own page with the detail — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Langley
One price wouldn't be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much the tank holds.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a van.
The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. If it is not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Questions we hear about petrol in diesel in Langley
Fuel drains on a Langley petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it is where a big share of this work happens. We visit Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if we can work there.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
What petrol has diluted isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct issue. So no. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.
You, and your vehicle, still together?
Never turn the car on again.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers fear.
