Petrol in a Diesel Car in Leicester

With that tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet turned over, almost every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That outcome is determined in the minutes straight after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. Across Leicester and the rest of Leicestershire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Contact us before everything else begins, so you'll know what follows from there.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for several miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start it. And if started, don't rely on it: that fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it greases — that high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: switching it on is often sufficient to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into exactly those components.
  • Never water down it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • A motor that hasn't moved is the quickest one to handle, so wait where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Horsefair Street? Hazards on, then leave the car there. An awkward location works for us better than a started engine.
  • Before you phone, work out your position. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts LE1 5 — that's what determines whether the van turns up or circles.
  • What went in, approximately how many litres, and also if your car has started — those three answers determine your whole visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

It kicks off at a forecourt, typically. Frequently the job wraps up at one too. Our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's permission, so if you are still at Texaco that is usually where this drain gets done.

No place other than a forecourt can this be spotted with the motor still cold. Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.

Attendants will generally chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Welcome the help. Cranking the car just for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Leicester

How much fuel your pump has drawn is what we're truly asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the enquiry we like goes like this: diesel Volkswagen Passat, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now shut off outside Fresh Village.

Twenty to nine. By Sparkenhoe Community Primary School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Turn the hazards on, leave your motor alone, and call us. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Skoda Octavia or anything else — except that fuel is supplied on demand, and a drive taken in a rush needs a great deal of it.

Simple job, this one — till somebody drives it home. A diesel Peugeot 308 parked outside Knight & Garter with petrol in the tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so park the car and ring us once it is light. Expect a query about the run there, though. Short and cold is exactly where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can get past the rings then into the sump.

New spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical rather than sloppy: the smaller petrol nozzle fits a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Filled up near The Leicester Seamstress without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes E-Class you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody spots it, and distance is what decides how much petrol ends up at your injectors.

Your filter, your lines, the pump and its rail: that is where that blend is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with the tank contents. So that tank isn't where most of the damage rests by this point, and a diesel BMW 5 Series that made it by Leicester Market needs the circuit flushed rather than emptied.

Leicester and the villages near it

As a cathedral city, Leicester has a routine call, while the villages nearby come with it on the same trip: Black Friars and Southfields, Highfields and Frog Island, New Found Pool.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all places across Leicestershire, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list means nothing at all about whether our technicians come. Contact us and ask instead of presuming — boundaries particularly, and anywhere the satnav can struggle with.

The patch the page covers sits on the map. Every bit of that is territory our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.

Stranded on the roadside somewhere around Leicester?

Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull in anywhere safe. Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge beside Hotel Street, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards going? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Out of the car while it's not safe to wait there, by it if it is. Do not fire up the motor to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mix further into your fuel system. A technician coming to a difficult spot is no trouble for us, and it is a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

This is where the M1 comes in — under 5 miles away from Leicester. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.

Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and don't restart the car to move it. It alters what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

A bit about Leicester

Leicester is a city situated on the River Soar in the East Midlands region of England, with a population of around 208,244 people. Leicester sits at an elevation of 74 metres, approximately 88.8 miles north of London, and is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing. Leicester is close to nearby places such as Black Friars, Southfields, and Highfields, and is also near the city of Coventry, which is 22.1 miles away. Leicester has a diverse range of communities and neighbourhoods, reflecting its long history and cultural heritage.

Once we arrive with you in Leicester: what we do

  • We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.
  • Your tank is emptied of everything.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • Our engineers put new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • When it is fired up, our engineers check it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, and as everything is done where your car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

Leicester AdBlue removal is a distinct job

The problem isn't the same, though the opening step is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection your fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up instead.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Leicester page. Both are ours to deal with.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Leicester

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what varies it:

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and whether it has run. If it's not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common queries in Leicester

I am on a forecourt around Leicester. Can you drain it on the spot?

A big part of this work takes place there, so yes. We work at Murco and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more regularly than drivers expect.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Keep the car turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car after that. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across Leicestershire and in Leicester: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
