Leslie Parks: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With your tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Leslie Parks and the remainder of Fife, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Contact us and our engineers shall explain what follows after that before you do anything else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try first
- Don't fire it up — and don't rely on it if it does start. Here is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel normally just can't run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and pulls away quite happily for a few miles. It isn't all right. It is wearing your fuel system whenever you drive.
- Leave your ignition off too. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it protects the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching the ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, which moves this petrol out of that tank then into precisely those parts.
- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- We would sooner travel to a tricky place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to sort out than a car that hasn't moved. On the verge on B969, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
- Before you call, work out your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting KY7 5 — that's what decides whether our van arrives or circles.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus if the motor has been turned over. Your replies decide everything that comes after.
The high-pressure fuel pump did that morning commute working on a liquid that had shed most of the protection it is designed around. Diesel greases that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of the fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So take a diesel Volkswagen Golf, filled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left standing outside Markinch until you realise close to eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that changed plenty, which is why the question our technicians ask you is about mileage rather than hours. Call us. Keep it right where it is.
If you have put petrol in your diesel Skoda Octavia around Leslie Parks and you are now stranded at Lidl with a boot packed with shopping, phone us. Don't start it a second time to leave the space. Our technicians will come to you, empty that tank, clean those fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses hardly any of it, so those are often the easy ones.
What we'll ask about is if that run there was brief and chilly, because that's where petrol is least able to burn properly — and whatever doesn't burn can work past the rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Audi A4 standing in the car park outside The Stanes carrying a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing degrades whilst it sits, and so leave the vehicle there overnight then ring us in the morning.
About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Mercedes C-Class left near Elephant group hardly two streets on. Call us, then leave it off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so your filter and your pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence flushing your lines instead of only emptying that tank.
Drain it then put clean diesel in — that's the suggestion you'll get, generally from somebody confident, and it is half true. Do precisely that to a diesel BMW X1 close to Fossil wall and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound reasonable. What occurs next is the issue: the motor straight away sucks the petrol left waiting in the filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead. Our engineers flush your system and take your filter off where the vehicle has a serviceable one, which is the difference between your car being repaired and the vehicle simply starting.
Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel
Much of the job starts at a forecourt, which means a large share of that gets completed at one. If you are still on the forecourt at Asda, that is usually where this drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent.
At a forecourt, the mistake is stopped with the motor never fired, and no place else does it. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the keys.
Push the vehicle out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next customer gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Firing the car over four vehicle lengths? Don't.
Coverage near Leslie Parks
Leslie Parks is a residential suburb, and our technicians go out to the town and to the villages around it on the same rounds: Foresters Lodge, Pitcoudie, Whinnyknowe, Cadham and Balfarg.
If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all places in Fife, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours. Guessing is the mistake to resist, especially on the border or anywhere your phone goes wrong. Phone to enquire.
The map shows the ground the page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our engineers work on, and none of it requires the vehicle to come to us.
Stuck by the kerbside near Leslie Parks
Some drivers have no sensible spot to pull over whatsoever. Set off, then realised? Ended up on the verge on Cadham Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.
Okay right there? Wait with it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it. Don't fire up your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mixture further into the fuel system. We'll take our van to an awkward location without any bother, and for the car that's much better than carrying on.
Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has travelled
The local M90 is the one which counts here, and sits under 10 miles from Leslie Parks. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are typically a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.
Take the first exit that's safe, stop there, and do not restart the vehicle to move it. Long run? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it alters what goes in our van.

The job in Leslie Parks, step by step
- The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and whether your motor has run.
- The polluted fuel comes from that tank.
- Our engineers rinse the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what's left in the fuel system is not what started the problem.
- Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
- We turn it on and check it runs correctly on new diesel.
From there, you are ready to drive away. All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very rare.
A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Leslie Parks
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas this fault beneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the protection the system relies on. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.
Both are ours. There's a separate Leslie Parks page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Leslie Parks prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain
One price wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank holds.
- The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.
Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Leslie Parks
I am on a forecourt around Leslie Parks. Can you drain the car here?
A fair portion of this work takes place there, so yes. We work at Shell and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there.
Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Whether the engine has run matters a lot more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle
Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep it off. Driving takes the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate fault. So no. The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Not at all. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.
Is the vehicle still with you?
That engine stays off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later on. A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than people fear.
