Petrol in a Diesel Car in Levan
With the tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is settled in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Across Levan and the rest of Inverclyde, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. A single call to us is enough: our technicians can explain what comes next. Try that straight away.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do now
- Don't fire it up — and do not rely on it if it does start. Here is the part drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel generally just cannot run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and pulls away perfectly well for several miles. It is not all right. It's wearing your fuel system as you drive.
- Leave the ignition be as well. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank and into precisely those parts.
- Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes — so don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has not moved is the simplest one to handle, and we would rather get to a difficult location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Levanne Place, switch your hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
- The van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting PA19 1, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you ring.
- What got in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the motor has run — those three details decide your whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at the forecourt?
A large portion of the job ends up finished at a pump, because that's where it usually begins. Still at BP? Then that's normally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the owner.
A forecourt is the one setting this can be caught before your motor has fired. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car stands.
Move the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next driver gets past the pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.
Coverage near Levan
Trumpethill, Midton, Ashton, Drumillan Hill, Coppermine — all of these on the rounds that take us over to Levan too, a residential suburb.
There are separate pages for most towns across Inverclyde, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether we come. Presuming is the thing to resist, especially on a border or somewhere your satnav gets lost. Contact us to enquire.
This map shows the ground the page covers. All of it is ground we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never move the vehicle anywhere.
You will be advised to shift the vehicle clear of the gateway and sort it out later. Don't. On the zig-zags at the local primary school, a misfuelled Peugeot 308 running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Fire it up three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime pulls more petrol beyond the filter toward the pump. Let them grumble. Call us.
Three answers decide much of the work: what got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them as soon as we arrive at your car in the car park outside the pub in the village. Next the tainted blend comes out of the tank, the lines are cleaned, and where your Dacia Duster has a serviceable filter, it comes off. When fresh diesel is in and your system bled, our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly before you pull away.
Leave the Audi A3 by Castle Levan then call us. We're blunt about not driving on because a worn pump sheds, and what it loses moves onward with your fuel to your injectors further along.
A throttle gone soft, white smoke, an uneven idle, knocking: that is a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 5 Series telling you what is wrong. Do not start the car to find a better spot — turn off where you have stopped, by Jubilee Drinking Fountain or anywhere else.
Fixed and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: we flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there's a working one. Compare that with the sure of themselves advice you'll get — drain it, refill with clean diesel. Half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Ford Kuga by Larkfield Community Hall and it'll start, which is precisely why the suggestion sounds plausible. Then the motor pulls the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, because emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.
Broken down by the roadside near Levan
The chance to pull over anywhere suitable does not fall to everyone. Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge on Farm Road, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.
Remain by your car if it is sensible to be inside, yet clear of the car when it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. We'll bring the van to an awkward location without any trouble, and for the car that is a lot better than pressing on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled
This is where the local M8 counts, under 15 miles out of Levan. A loss of power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.
Never start it to reposition. Get off at the next safe exit then turn off. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what we bring.
Levan itself
Levan is a coastal suburban area in Inverclyde, situated near the towns of Greenock and Gourock, with Levan being one of the smaller residential communities in the area. Levan sits at a low elevation of around 11 metres, looking out onto the Firth of Clyde, and Levan is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Levan is located near other suburban areas such as Trumpethill, Midton, and Ashton, with Levan being a part of the wider Glasgow commuter belt.
The call-out in Levan, step by step
- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers change what the work really is.
- That tank gets emptied completely.
- What is left in the system should not be what caused the problem, and so the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleared.
- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
- Once it's started, our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
Then it is ready to pull away. There's no need for a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Levan is a distinct job
Do not start it: that opening rule stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and deposits instead.
Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Levan page. Both are ours to handle.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Levan
We can't put one number on this page truthfully, because this job isn't one job. What moves it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for a technician.
Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it is not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Levan
I am on a forecourt around Levan. Can you drain the vehicle here?
Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this gets done. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our engineers answer there and then.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more commonly than people assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
No. Carried out properly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. It belongs to a separate problem from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because we drain and flush the car wherever it is.
Standing next to it?
Keep it switched off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on. A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists expect.
