Petrol in Diesel

Leven: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not turn on the engine. While the fuel is still inside that tank and your engine has not run, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets settled in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, across Leven and the remainder of Fife, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Phone before anything else happens, and you'll hear what follows from there.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • While you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. This is why you do not fire it up, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Switching your ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition alone.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes — so never pour diesel on top to thin it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Durie Street, anywhere — a tricky place for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.
  • The van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting KY8 4, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you phone.
  • Three replies shape the full call-out: the liquid you poured in, the ballpark measure of it, plus whether anything has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at the forecourt?

Much of this work begins at a pump, so a big share of it is completed there. If you're still on the forecourt at Sainsbury's, that is typically where the drain happens — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission.

At a forecourt, it gets caught with the motor never run, and no place else manages that. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key.

Attendants will generally help out pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get past. Welcome the assistance. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Leven

The phone call our technicians hope for goes like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, a couple of litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now turned off outside Lidl. What we are truly asking is how much fuel the pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

A passer-by will advise you to shift it out of that gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. A misfilled diesel Mercedes C-Class on the zig-zags outside the local primary school is a nuisance; the same motor started three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes your lines and pulls more petrol past the fuel filter and into the pump. Leave it, let them moan, and phone us.

You set off at the end, once we have fired it up and confirmed it runs smoothly on fresh diesel, with your system primed. Before that, in the car park at The Crown Inn, the contaminated fuel comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get cleaned and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A3 has a replaceable one. It all starts with three questions when our technicians get to the vehicle: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

The smaller petrol nozzle fits a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not slapdash. New locations see most of that for that reason. So: topped up by Denbeath Boxing Club without thinking, in a diesel Volvo XC60 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone spots it, and distance decides how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the blend goes into the fuel filter, into the fuel lines, into the pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Citroen C4 Picasso that made it by Church Hall wants its system flushed. Emptying isn't the same thing.

Can we serve your end of Leven?

Leven Links, Sillerhole, Scoonie, Innerleven, Broom — all of those on the runs that bring us out to Leven as well, a coastal town.

Our technicians still come. Those places above are only the closest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places across Fife, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Guessing is the mistake to resist, above all on the border or somewhere your phone goes wrong. Ring us to enquire.

The patch this page covers appears on the map. All of that is territory we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring the vehicle anywhere.

Leven: broken down wherever you pulled up

Not everybody gets a safe place to pull in. If you realised after setting off and ended up on the verge on Waggon Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that's a common call for us rather than an odd one.

Clear of the car while it is not safe to wait in it, beside it when it is. Do not fire up the motor to limp the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into the system. We will take our van to an inconvenient place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's much better than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull over, then see below

Here is where the local M90 matters, under 25 miles from Leven. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Do not restart it to move it. Get off at the next safe junction and switch off. Long trip? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in our van.

About Leven

Leven is a coastal town in Fife, situated on the north shore of the Firth of Forth at a low elevation of around 12 metres. Leven has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly composed of flats, and is close to nearby places such as Leven Links and Scoonie. Leven is located near several beaches, including Sillerhole, and is within commuting distance of Dundee, which is 18 miles away. Leven is also relatively distant from major English cities, with London being around 344 miles to the south.

What our engineers do when we arrive with you in Leven

  • Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Your tank gets emptied of it.
  • What is left in the system should not be what created the issue, so your fuel lines get rinsed and your filter cleaned.
  • Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • It's started with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running properly.

Then it is ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and as all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Leven?

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — do not crank it — but this problem isn't. Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue instead.

AdBlue removal around Leven has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. We cover both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Leven

One number wouldn't be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much that tank takes.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely reach your car and work on it, which depends on where the car is.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Leven drivers

Fuel drains on a Leven petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians attend Shell and the other forecourts around town routinely.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then keep it off. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you is not restarting it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a change and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Turned off is how it stays.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and let it remain that way. A still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than drivers expect.
