Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lexden

Do not turn on your engine. If the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not yet been started, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, throughout Lexden and the remainder of Essex, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Ring us before all else starts, so you will see what happens after that.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never start it. And having started, don't rely on it: that fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Leave your ignition be too. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching the ignition on is frequently enough to prime that system, which carries this petrol out of that tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so never put diesel on top to weaken it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort out, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Shakespeare Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started engine.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting CO3 4, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.
  • What got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has fired — those three answers decide the whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The high-pressure pump did that morning run working on a liquid that had shed most of the protection it is made for. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of your fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So take a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, topped up at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left sitting at Colchester till you realise close to eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that altered a lot, which is why the thing our engineers ask is about mileage not time. Phone. Keep the car exactly where it sits.

Diesel Peugeot 308. Some litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Shut off now, outside Lexden Convenience Store. That's the phone call we hope for, since the real question under it is about amount through the pump rather than hours on the clock.

Three replies settle much of the work: what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we reach the vehicle in the car park at The Prettygate. Then the contaminated blend comes out of that tank, the fuel lines are cleaned, and where your Audi A3 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After clean diesel is in and the fuel system bled, we fire it up and check it runs correctly before you set off.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and left the diesel BMW X1 up by Lexden Mount a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us and leave the car off. The short drive truly assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so weakened fuel has got to the filter and the pump — which is why our engineers clean the lines instead of only clearing your tank.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the system: our engineers flush it, and take the filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves tip you'll get — drain it, refill with new diesel. Only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Skoda Superb by Saint Leonard and it'll start, which is precisely why the advice sounds reasonable. Then the motor draws the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.

Draining petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

Plenty of this work begins at the pump, meaning a large portion of it gets finished on site. If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that is usually where the drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent.

Before the engine has run — the forecourt is the only location this gets spotted. The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key decide how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter require cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where the car stands.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you roll it. Very much worth doing. Shifting the car four bays does not justify starting the engine.

Lexden and the towns next to it

The same rounds carry us to Shrub End, Stanway, Chitts Hills, Beacon End and Abbey Field besides Lexden, which is a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are separate pages for nearly all places across Essex, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours. On the boundary, or anywhere your phone can't find? Contact us and check instead of guessing.

The map marks the ground the page includes. The vehicle never needs to move to us. We operate across all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck by the kerbside anywhere around Lexden?

The opportunity to pull over anywhere safe does not come to everybody. Set off, then twigged? Landed by the verge on Church Lane, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Clear of the motor when it is not safe to sit there, with it when it is. Never restart your motor to nurse it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mix further into your fuel system. A technician driving to an awkward place is no trouble for us, and it's far better for your car than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull over, and read this

The M11 is the road which matters here, and lies under 50 miles from Lexden. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next exit that's safe, stop there, and never restart the vehicle to reposition. Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you phone. What our engineers bring alters.

Our job around Lexden, step by step

  • Our technicians establish what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • The contaminated mixture comes from that tank.
  • Our engineers rinse your fuel lines and clear your filter, so what is remaining in the system isn't what caused the issue.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • Our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Then it's ready to drive away. We do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been noticed early, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Lexden

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas the fault beneath it is a different one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal around Lexden has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers cover both.

Lexden costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the figure is set out below, as this job isn't one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single number on this page.

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much the tank holds.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Lexden

At a petrol station around Lexden, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big part of this work happens there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site consents: East of England Coop, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer straight away.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the vehicle off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more commonly than motorists assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Is your car still with you?

That engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than motorists expect.
