Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lightcliffe? Don't Start It
Don't turn on the motor. While the fuel is still in your tank and the engine has not yet been started, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that is decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, all over Lightcliffe and the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Contact us so our engineers shall tell you what happens next before you try anything else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- Whenever you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear. That is why you do not start it, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.
- Turning the car's ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition be.
- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on West Avenue, anywhere — an odd location for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a motor that never shifted.
- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts HX3 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.
- What got in, about how many litres, plus if the engine has run — these three details settle the full call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Can petrol be drained out of your diesel on a forecourt?
Pumps are where the work mostly starts, and where a good chunk of it ends. Our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement, and so if you are still at Shell that's typically where the drain happens.
No place other than a garage can this be halted with the motor still untouched. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys.
Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Well worth it. Starting the car to move four vehicle lengths is not.
How much fuel your pump has pulled is what we're really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry our engineers hope for runs like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now turned off at Asda.
Don't chance it. The journey home from Sun Inn is quite possible, which is exactly the problem — a weakened tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the parts your fuel is supposed to protect. Phone, and let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it is.
A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built escapes past gaps instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted components it flows through — that is the whole mechanism. It accounts for the usual Lightcliffe Park call too: a diesel Mercedes C-Class that drove out without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.
Rattling, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That is a misfilled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, near Bailiff Bridge War Memorial or anywhere else, and never start the vehicle to find a better location.
By this point the tank isn't where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the fuel filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Volkswagen Touran that made it close to St Chad needs the system purged, not emptied.
Service near Lightcliffe
These same runs take us to Bailiff Bridge, Hove Edge, Priestley Green, Slead Syke and Norwood Green besides Lightcliffe, which is a residential suburb.
There are separate pages for nearly all locations across West Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off that list says nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come. Assuming is the mistake to resist, particularly on a boundary or anywhere your satnav fails. Contact us and check.
The patch this page spans appears on this map. Your car never needs to move to us. We operate over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Stuck by the kerbside around Lightcliffe
Some drivers have no sensible spot to stop at all. If you realised after setting off and landed along the verge on Till Carr Lane, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a routine call for us rather than a rare one.
Fine right there? Wait by it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it. Don't restart it to reach a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into the fuel system. However difficult the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for your car than pressing on.
Driven it already? Pull in, and read below
This is where your M62 comes in — under 3 miles from Lightcliffe. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power ebbs away, the idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.
The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring differs.
Lightcliffe itself
Lightcliffe is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated near the River Calder and close to the city of Bradford. Lightcliffe has a mix of semi-detached housing and is located at an elevation of 126 metres, with nearby places including Bailiff Bridge, Hove Edge, and Priestley Green. Lightcliffe is part of the larger urban area surrounding Bradford, but retains its own distinct character. Lightcliffe is approximately 168 miles north of London, making it a commuter base for those working in the city,
What our engineers do when we reach you around Lightcliffe
- Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that was put in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- The tainted mixture is drawn out of your tank.
- What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what caused the problem, and so the lines get purged and the filter cleaned.
- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- When it's fired up, our engineers check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
At that point it's ready to set off. Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, long-term damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Lightcliffe?
If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is the same — don't start it — but the issue is not. Petrol thins the diesel and strips the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and deposits in its place.
Both are ours. There's a separate Lightcliffe page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Lightcliffe
Frankly, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what moves it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much that tank takes.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
- Where the car is, and whether a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.
Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it is not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Petrol in diesel: common queries in Lightcliffe
Fuel drains on a Lightcliffe petrol station forecourt
A fair part of this work gets done there, so yes. Our technicians work at Headlands and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.
Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?
Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the system.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?
Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists assume.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A drain then flush carried out properly is not an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, because we drain and clean your car wherever it is.
Is the vehicle still with you?
The motor remains off.
Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more frequently than drivers fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
