Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lilleshall?

With the tank still carrying the petrol and your engine not yet run, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep the engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Lilleshall and the rest of Shropshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Phone and we will show you what follows next before you attempt much else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Never fire it up. Turned on regardless? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol car typically cannot run, so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off happily, for a few miles. People get that reversed. It isn't okay — your fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Turning the ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Do not weaken it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort, and we would much rather come to a tricky place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Hillside, switch your hazards on and leave the car there.
  • Before you call, gather your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts TF10 9 — that is what settles whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • Three facts shape the whole call-out: the liquid you tipped in, the approximate quantity involved, plus if it has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Your high-pressure pump spent that morning run labouring on a liquid that had given up most of the protection it is built around. Diesel protects that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of the fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So take a diesel Volkswagen Golf, topped up at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked standing at Oakengates till you realise somewhere around eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The few miles before that did plenty, which is why the question our technicians ask you is about distance not time. Phone. Keep the vehicle exactly where it stands.

Move the car out of that gateway and sort it out later — that's what someone will say, and it's wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags at Lilleshall Primary School, a wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 3008 is a nuisance and nothing worse. Started three more times for courtesy, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, as priming happens with every start and more petrol goes through your filter toward the pump. Let everyone moan. Call us.

Risk the trip home from The Red House? Don't. It will fire up and it will move off perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a diluted tank behaves generally whilst wearing the parts your fuel should be protecting. Park the Audi A3 then ring us.

Here's the whole mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the normal Abbey Wood call — a diesel BMW 5 Series, out there without complaint and back down on power, rough at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it bleeds past those gaps instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the engine was designed round. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

What takes place next is the issue. Your engine straight away sucks the petrol still sitting in the filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, as emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put clean diesel in, a person certain will tell you — and that advice is half right, as do it to a diesel Renault Captur parked up, Lilleshall Village Hall say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Ring us instead. We flush the circuit and take your filter off where your vehicle has a serviceable one, and that is the difference between your car being put right and the vehicle merely starting.

At the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

Much of the work begins at a pump, which means a fair part of that is completed on site. The drain generally happens right there. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's permission, that is a place our technicians work, and routinely.

Before your motor has started — a garage is the one spot this ends up spotted. Our technicians can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past the tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what decide that.

Move the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next driver gets past the pump, and that is worth doing. Starting the car to move four vehicle lengths isn't.

Will our technicians serve your corner of Lilleshall?

Being a rural village, Lilleshall sees a regular visit, while its neighbours close by come along on that same round: The Incline and Honnington, Brockton and Cheswell, Muxton.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all towns around Shropshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from this list means nothing at all about whether our engineers come. Phone to enquire rather than assuming, especially when you are on a border or anywhere your satnav struggles with.

The patch the page covers sits on our map. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is territory we cover, and none of that asks the vehicle to travel to us.

Lilleshall: stranded wherever you stopped

Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull over anywhere suitable. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Church Road as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.

Okay there? Remain beside it. Not safe? Step out and clear of it. Do not restart it to get to a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into your fuel system. However difficult the location, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that's far better for the car than carrying on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

The M54 is the one that counts here, and it sits under 5 miles from Lilleshall. Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next junction that's safe, stop there, and never restart the car to move it. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.

A bit about Lilleshall

Lilleshall is a village in Shropshire, situated inland at an elevation of 111 metres, approximately 15 miles from Wolverhampton. Lilleshall has a population of around 944 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Lilleshall is close to nearby places such as The Incline, Honnington, and Brockton, and is about 128 miles northwest of London.

Once we get to you around Lilleshall: what we do

  • Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The contaminated mixture is pulled out of the tank.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • The engine is fired up and checked to make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From there, you are ready to set off. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's caught early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Lilleshall?

Never start it: that first rule applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself. Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the lubrication the system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Lilleshall page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Lilleshall costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our engineers can't put one price on this page frankly, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Lilleshall

I'm on a forecourt in Lilleshall. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this gets done. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our engineers answer on the spot.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more frequently than drivers expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with your vehicle?

Never switch the engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists fear.
