Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lincluden?

With your tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is determined in the minutes immediately after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. All over Lincluden and the rest of Dumfries and Galloway, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. A single ring to us will be enough: we shall explain what comes next. Make this first.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. This is why you do not crank it, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the part people get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Turning the ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel put on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A motor that has never moved is the easiest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Criffel Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A tricky place works for us better than a started motor.
  • Keep your position ready before you call. A postcode that starts DG2 0 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van turning up and a van circling.
  • Three facts decide the full job: the fuel you put in, the approximate measure involved, plus if anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

At a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

A large chunk of the work gets done at a forecourt, as that's where it mostly starts. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is typically where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Nowhere but a garage can the mistake be spotted with the motor still unstarted. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the keys settle how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still put it right where your car is.

Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move the vehicle. Very much worth doing. Cranking it just to shift four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Lincluden

The awkward part is the bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height barrier on the way in that settles if a technician can reach you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one outside Aldi, tell us how much clearance there is around you and which way round the car is. Those we attend regularly. Should there be no room to work next to the diesel BMW 3 Series, it gets moved with the motor off, and not out of pedantry over a few seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of the blend exits the tank for your pump, and two shunts into a roomier space have gradually made a worse job of what was just a motor sitting still.

What we will want to know is whether the drive there was brief and cold, since that is where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and anything that does not burn can get past the rings then into the engine oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Audi A4 parked in the parking area by Abbey Inn carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing worsens whilst it waits, so leave the car there overnight and call us first thing.

None of that is your engine failing. That's the part worth hearing, and it's why the normal Popeyes Park call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Dacia Duster drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, your idle lumpy and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted components it flows through; petrol thins it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built bleeds past tolerances, delivery turns up poorer and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once the fuel is corrected.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, a lumpy idle, rattling: that's a misfilled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what's wrong. Never restart it to find a better spot — switch off where you have stopped, by Lincluden Collegiate Church or anywhere else.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that blend goes into the filter, into the lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 208 that made it near Kirkhill Mote needs its circuit purged. Clearing isn't the same thing.

Coverage in Lincluden

Nunholm, Summerville, Nithside, Lochside, Lochfield — every one of these on the runs that take us over to Lincluden itself, a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and nearly all places across Dumfries and Galloway have a page of their own somewhere on our site. On the border, or somewhere your phone struggles with? Phone to ask rather than presuming.

Look at this map for the area covered on this page. All of it is territory our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring the vehicle anywhere.

Roadside call-outs across Lincluden

Some people find no suitable spot to pull over at all. A common call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, landed by the verge on Dudgeon Avenue or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Out of your car while it isn't wise to sit there, by it when it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. However awkward the spot, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is far better for the car than driving on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

The A74(M) is the one that matters here, and runs under 15 miles from Lincluden. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they appear are generally a loss of power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you ring. It alters what our engineers bring.

Where is Lincluden?

Lincluden is a suburban area situated on the banks of the River Nith in Dumfries and Galloway, with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. Lincluden sits at a low elevation of around 14 metres, near the mouth of the river and close to the nearby communities of Nunholm and Summerville. Lincluden is located near the city of Dumfries, but is also within commuting distance of Carlisle, which is approximately 30 miles away. Lincluden has a population of around 2836 people, living in a variety of housing types, with terraced houses being predominant.

When we arrive with you around Lincluden: what happens

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Your tank gets emptied of everything.
  • What is left in your system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so the fuel lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • When it's fired up, we confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Our engineers do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed early, it's very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Lincluden

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your engine stays off — while the issue underneath it is a distinct one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Lincluden page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Lincluden?

One number wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much that tank holds.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Lincluden

Fuel drains on a Lincluden petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. We visit Tesco and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend drawn through it.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It is fixable a lot more regularly than drivers fear, even though driving is what moves the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a modification and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, since we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Is your car still with you?

Keep the engine shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
