Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lindfield?

With your tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Across Lindfield and the remainder of West Sussex, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Our technicians can show you what your next stage is. Phone — it happens before everything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Don't start the vehicle. Turned on all the same? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally won't run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for several miles. Most people get that muddled. It is not fine — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: flicking it on is usually enough to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into exactly those components.
  • Do not thin it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A motor that has not moved is the simplest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on High Street? Hazards on, then keep it there. An odd location suits us better than a started motor.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode starting RH16 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.
  • What got in, about how much, and also whether the car has started — those three facts decide the whole visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of the job begins at a pump, which means a good chunk of it is finished on site. Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's consent, so if you are still at Texaco that's normally where the drain takes place.

Before your motor has started — a forecourt is the single spot the mistake is halted. The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key decide how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter require flushing as well as that tank. It's not a calamity, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car is.

Attendants will usually help out pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get past. Welcome the assistance. Moving the car four spaces doesn't justify starting the engine.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Lindfield

Can we cover your corner of Lindfield?

Those same trips bring us to Walstead, Franklands Village, Lyoth Common, Haywards Heath and Bolnore as well as Lindfield, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of places across West Sussex, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from the list means nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. On a boundary, or somewhere a satnav misreads? Phone and check rather than guessing.

That map outlines the ground the page spans. The lot is territory our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never drive your vehicle anywhere.

You'll be told to move the vehicle out of the gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags at Lindfield Primary Academy, a misfuelled Peugeot 308 running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Crank it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime draws more petrol through your filter towards the pump. Let them grumble. Phone.

You drive off at the end, once we have fired it up and made sure it runs properly on clean diesel, with the system bled. Before that, in the car park outside The Stand Up Inn, the contaminated fuel comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Mercedes A-Class has a replaceable one. Everything begins with three questions when we get to your car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

The pump is not turning, and so whatever your diesel BMW X1 did on the way to Lindfield Common, none of that is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but never drive it home to buy any.

About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Ford Fiesta parked close to Evangelical Free Church barely two streets on. Call us, then leave the vehicle off. A short drive does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so your filter and the pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence purging the fuel lines instead of only draining that tank.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — close to Lindfield URC or anywhere at all. Clattering, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfuelled diesel Vauxhall Insignia telling you what's wrong.

Lindfield: stranded where you stopped

Not everybody finds a suitable spot to stop. Set off, then realised? Finished up along the verge of Black Hill, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Clear of the motor if it's not safe to sit in it, beside it if it is. Never fire it up to reach a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mixture deeper into the fuel system. However awkward the spot, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that's much better for the car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has moved

Your M23 is the road that matters here, and sits under 10 miles from Lindfield. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Come off at the first safe junction, switch off, and do not start it to move it. Long run? Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in our van.

Lindfield itself

Lindfield is a suburban area in West Sussex, situated on the banks of the River Ouse at an elevation of around 43 metres. Lindfield lies approximately 34 miles south of London and 13 miles north of Brighton and Hove, within a network of nearby settlements including Walstead, Franklands Village, and Lyoth Common. Lindfield is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and a population of around 4744 residents. Lindfield's riverside setting contributes to its scenic environment.

What our engineers do when our engineers reach you in Lindfield

  • The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
  • Away goes the tainted mixture.
  • What is left in your system shouldn't be what created the problem, so the lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • The motor is started and checked to make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

Lindfield AdBlue removal is a different job

Never crank it: that first step applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Lindfield page. Both are ours to deal with.

Lindfield prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the price is laid out below, since this job isn't one job and we can't truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for our van.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it's not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Lindfield

Fuel drains on a Lindfield petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens. We work at Shell and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. It's recoverable far more regularly than drivers assume, even though driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different issue. So no. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Still with your car?

Keep the engine turned off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
