Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lindwell?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Lindwell and the rest of West Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Contact us and then our team shall show you what happens after that before you do anything else.
The first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- While you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. That is why you never crank it, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Leave the ignition be also. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates your injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which carries that petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.
- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to handle, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Road End? Hazards on, and leave the car there. A tricky place works for us better than a started engine.
- Our van turning up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning HX4 8, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you call.
- Three facts decide the full visit: the liquid you tipped in, the rough measure of it, and whether anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
Phone us before you move the car. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan this morning, and the car outside Halifax ever since? Then the afternoon has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, and any harm came on the drive in, when your pump was pulling diesel that petrol had thinned.
We are in car parks like the one at Morrisons a lot, and it is almost never the fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height bar at the way in, which settles if a van reaches you at all. So say how boxed in you are when you phone, and which way the car is facing. If there is no space to work beside your Skoda Octavia, we move it without the motor. That isn't fussiness over a few seconds: starts prime things, blend comes out of your tank toward your pump, and a vehicle shifted twice for a nicer spot is quietly a bigger job than one nobody touched.
This is what a job in the car park at The Star generally looks like. Our engineers reach the car, ask what got in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since — those three replies settle much of the work. Then the polluted mix comes out of the tank, your lines get rinsed, and the filter comes off where your Peugeot 3008 has a replaceable one. New diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then we fire it up, check it runs smoothly, and you drive away.
Rarely the trouble, the place. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, and a tight parking bay is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from near Greetland Library, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your BMW 1 Series gets cleared, the filter changed where a workable one exists, your lines flushed and fresh fuel put through the full system — since by now the worst of that is in your lines, not that tank.
A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody spots anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what settles the amount of petrol getting to your injectors. Nothing slapdash about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck takes the narrower petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, and so new locations see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, near Kingdom Hall West Vale Congregation or not, and we'll come to the Vauxhall Astra.
Removing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt
Most of the job starts at a forecourt, meaning a fair part of it gets done there. Our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission, so if you are still at JET that's usually where this drain happens.
Before the engine has fired — a garage is the one place this gets spotted. The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key determine how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where the car sits.
The attendants will normally happily push the car away from the pump so the next customer can get past. That is worth doing. Firing it over four car lengths? Not a chance.
Coverage around Lindwell
Being a residential suburb, Lindwell has a steady visit, whilst its neighbours nearby come along on the same trip: Cross Hill and West Vale, Sunnybank and Little Bradley, Greetland.
If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for most locations in West Yorkshire, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Ring us to enquire rather than assuming — county lines above all, and anywhere your satnav tends to misread.
See the map for the patch shown here. Every bit of that is territory our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.
Lindwell: stranded where you pulled up
Not everybody gets a decent place to stop. Set off, then noticed? Ended up on the verge beside Hoults Lane, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a common call here. Not an unusual one.
Whether you wait with the vehicle or move clear of it turns on if staying in it is wise. Do not restart it to reach a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into your fuel system. We'll send our van to a tricky place without any bother, and for your car that's much better than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has moved
The M62 is the road which counts here, and runs under 3 miles from Lindwell. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.
Take the next junction that is sensible, stop there, and do not restart it to move it. On a longer run — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what we bring.

When our engineers arrive with you around Lindwell: what follows
- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies alter what the work really is.
- Our technicians clear the tank of the tainted mixture.
- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what created the trouble, so the lines get purged and the filter cleaned.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
- Once it's turned on, our technicians make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.
At that point it is ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been caught quickly, and because everything is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.
Lindwell AdBlue removal is a different job
Don't fire it up: that opening instruction stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.
Both are ours. There's a separate Lindwell page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Lindwell
What moves the price is laid out below, because this job is not one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single price on this page.
- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank holds.
- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?
Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.
Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Lindwell
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Lindwell?
A good part of this work gets done there, so yes. We attend Shell and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether the motor has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?
Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Not at all. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.
You, and your vehicle, still together?
Your engine stays off.
If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
