Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lisburn? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Lisburn and the rest of County Down. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. While the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Call us before anything else happens, and you'll see what follows next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Do not crank it — and do not rely on it when it fires up. Here is the part drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor given diesel usually just won't run, so the person stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for a few miles. It is not okay. It's grinding the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition stays off also — flick it on and you often prime your system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for exactly those components.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Heugh Road? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An awkward place works for us better than a started engine.
  • Before you ring, work out your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting BT27 5 — that is what determines whether our van arrives or circles.
  • What was put in, about how many litres, and whether the motor has run — those three details settle the full call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Clio, sitting at the nearest station since this morning? The afternoon has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is inert. It was the run in that drew thinned diesel through the pump. Phone before you drive the car.

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at gentle throttle uses very little fuel. Petrol into a diesel Nissan Qashqai somewhere around Lisburn, a boot packed with shopping, and you stranded outside the local shops — phone us. Exiting the bay is never worth another start. Your tank gets drained where it sits, the lines flushed, new diesel in, and you drive home.

A diesel pump supplies fuel to demand, and a hurried morning drive needs plenty — so three miles in your Ford Focus seems like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine at the gates of the local primary school, running late, a receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, motor off, call us.

It will fire up. It will drive off just fine. That is the problem, as a diesel on a diluted tank behaves usually while wearing the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, do not risk the drive home from the pub in the village — leave the BMW 1 Series and call us.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, parked close to the centre. For a diesel Audi A6 whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Phone us, and let the car stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the fuel lines get cleaned and not just the tank cleared.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Lisburn

Can petrol be drained from your diesel at the forecourt?

Pumps are where this job often kicks off, and where a fair share of that closes. We operate on station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, and so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that's generally where this drain takes place.

The forecourt is the single spot this is spotted before the motor has run. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and your lines as well as that tank. That is still not a disaster, and our engineers deal with it where the vehicle is. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Move the vehicle out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that's worth doing. Firing the car to shift four car lengths is not.

Parts our vans reach around Lisburn

As a city, Lisburn has a regular call, whilst the places nearby go along on that same round: Lambeg and Hillhall, Tullynacross and Ballyskeagh, Milltown.

Not on the list? That says nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and the majority of locations around County Down have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Call us and ask instead of guessing, especially if you're on the border or anywhere a satnav struggles with.

The map shows the ground this page spans. Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to move to us.

Roadside call-outs around Lisburn

Not everybody gets the opportunity to pull over somewhere safe. A routine call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up along the verge on Dunskey Street or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Fine where you are? Sit beside it. Not okay? Step out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the blend further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. However tricky the place, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that is far better for your car than pressing on.

Run it already? Stop, and read below

Here is where the local M77 comes in — over 50 miles from Lisburn. Lost power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next exit that is sensible, pull up there, and do not start the car to reposition. It affects what our engineers bring, so say so when you call: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

A little about Lisburn

Lisburn is a city located in County Down, Northern Ireland, situated inland at an elevation of 29 metres. Lisburn lies approximately 7 miles southwest of Belfast and is close to nearby places such as Lambeg, Hillhall, and Tullynacross. Lisburn has a population of around 40,000 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Lisburn is also relatively distant from London, being around 321 miles away.

What happens when our engineers arrive with you in Lisburn

  • We find out what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
  • The tank gets emptied of it.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • Our engineers put fresh diesel in and bleed your system.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running properly.

That leaves it ready to set off. Our technicians do all of this wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been spotted quickly, it's very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

Lisburn AdBlue removal is a separate job

Don't start it: that opening instruction holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and deposits.

AdBlue removal in Lisburn has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Lisburn

One price would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Lisburn

At a petrol station in Lisburn, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good share of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally routinely.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable much more often than drivers assume.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate problem and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

No. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

The motor stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
