Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Little Bowden

If you have not started the motor yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Little Bowden or the rest of Leicestershire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Our technicians shall tell you what your next stage is. Phone — it goes before all else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Do not fire it up. Started all the same? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically will not run, so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for several miles. People get that backwards. It isn't all right — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition remains off also — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for exactly those parts.
  • Never add diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice presumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely gives you a larger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Dunmore Road, anywhere — a difficult place for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • Before you dial, work out your location. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning LE16 8 — that's what decides whether the technician turns up or circles.
  • What was put in, approximately how much, plus if the car has fired — the three facts decide the entire call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Phone before you move the car. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and the vehicle at Market Harborough ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is inert, and any wear came on the drive in, when the pump was pulling diesel that petrol had thinned.

A diesel pump delivers fuel to demand, and a frantic morning run asks for plenty — so three miles in your Nissan Qashqai feels like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine at the gates of Little Bowden School, running late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone us.

Fine on the way out, flat on the way back. If that is how that drive to Little Bowden Park went, the tank is where to look. Petrol thins diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further the Mercedes E-Class travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere safe, turn off then ring us.

Switch off where you have stopped, and don't start it to find somewhere better — by St Nicholas Church Hall or anywhere at all. Clattering, a ragged idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfilled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what's wrong.

Fixed and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is the system: our engineers flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there's a working one. Compare that with the certain suggestion you will get — drain the car, refill with clean diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel BMW X1 close to St Nicholas and it'll start, which is precisely why the suggestion sounds reasonable. Then the engine sucks the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, because emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Little Bowden

Can petrol be taken out of your diesel on the forecourt?

Plenty of the job starts at the pump, meaning a big portion of that gets done at one. If you're still on the forecourt at JET, that's normally where the drain takes place — our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.

Nowhere except a garage can this be stopped with the motor still unrun. Our technicians can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and moved there, and that drew fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys are what settle that.

Wheel the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Cranking it just to roll four car lengths isn't.

Service in Little Bowden

The same rounds take us to Market Harborough, Great Bowden, East Farndon, Great Oxendon and Braybrooke along with Little Bowden, which is a residential suburb.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and most towns across Leicestershire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Phone to ask instead of guessing, particularly where you are on the boundary or anywhere a satnav can't find.

The map shows the area the page includes. Our technicians work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and your car does not need to come to us.

Stranded on the kerbside somewhere in Little Bowden?

Not everybody finds a decent spot to pull over. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Scotland Road since you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.

Safe where you are? Wait by it. Not safe? Get out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We'll bring our van to an awkward place without any fuss, and for your car that's much better than driving on.

Run it already? Pull over, and see this

Here is where the local M1 comes into it — under 15 miles from Little Bowden. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are generally lost power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. It changes what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

What happens when our engineers arrive with you around Little Bowden

  • Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Your tank gets drained of everything.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what caused the issue, and so your fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • We start the car and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed quickly, and because everything is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Little Bowden?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas this issue beneath it is a separate one altogether. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Little Bowden page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Little Bowden

One price would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where your car is, and whether a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range. If it isn't time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Little Bowden

At a petrol station around Little Bowden, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair portion of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers work at Sainsbury's and the other forecourts around town all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more commonly than drivers fear.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct issue and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. The pump still has to put up with it, because that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Turned off is how the car stays.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from a lot more regularly than motorists fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
