Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Little Chell?

With that tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across Little Chell and the remainder of Staffordshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. One call to us will be plenty: our team will explain what follows after this. Try it first.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up — and don't rely on it when it runs. That is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel normally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives away perfectly well for a few miles. It isn't fine. It's wearing the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition be also. Diesel does two jobs: it ignites, and before it ignites it greases your high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is usually enough to prime that system, which moves this petrol out of your tank and into precisely those parts.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A car that has never shifted is the easiest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Little Chell Lane? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An awkward spot suits us better than a started diesel.
  • The van showing up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning ST6 6, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what got in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the car has been started. The replies settle all that comes after.

Draining petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

A good share of the job is completed at the pump, since that is where it often begins. Still at Murco Petroleum? Then that is normally where it takes place. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the station.

No place except a garage can this be caught with the engine still unrun. Fuel pulled out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is started and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and your lines as well as that tank. That is still not a calamity, and we put it right where the vehicle stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you push the car. Worth it. Starting the car to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Little Chell

Straightforward, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at light throttle draws little of it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat somewhere in Little Chell, a boot packed with shopping, and you sat at Lidl — phone us. Exiting that bay isn't worth a restart. The tank gets drained where it stands, your fuel lines purged, new diesel in, and you drive away.

Nothing tells you, as from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have seemed completely normal on the way back from Mill Hill Primary Academy, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor generally refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, ticks over, drives off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump keeps working without the lubrication its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left by St Michael's. For a diesel Vauxhall Astra whose engine has turned, that's about the best version there is. Phone us, and let it stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why your lines get rinsed and not just your tank emptied.

Unfamiliar spots are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical rather than slapdash: the slimmer petrol nozzle fits a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Fuelled up close to The Church of the Saviour without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes A-Class you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody realises, and mileage is what determines how much petrol reaches the injectors.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, your idle turned ragged, and your diesel Ford Fiesta is now resting near Tunstall Methodist Church. That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly rather than your engine giving up — and since there is no dashboard light for it, cars in that position typically get driven a second time before anyone rings. Do not. Turn it off and phone us.

Can our engineers serve your end of Little Chell?

Pitts Hill, Bank Top, Stanfield, Great Chell, Chell Heath — each of these on the runs that take us over to Little Chell itself, a residential suburb.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and most places across Staffordshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Close to a boundary, or anywhere the satnav struggles with? Call us to check instead of guessing.

This map shows the area this page spans. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory we serve, and none of that needs the car to come to us.

Stopped at the roadside anywhere around Little Chell?

Not everybody gets the opportunity to pull over anywhere sensible. If you noticed after setting off and landed by the verge beside Scott Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a normal call for us instead of a rare one.

Fine where you are? Wait with it. Not fine? Step out and away from it. Don't restart it to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into the system. Our van coming to an inconvenient place is no bother for us, and it is far better for the car than carrying on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

Here is where your M6 comes in, under 10 miles out of Little Chell. A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in our van.

A little about Little Chell

Little Chell is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, situated near the River Trent. Little Chell sits at an elevation of 184 metres, with views of the surrounding countryside. Little Chell is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is close to nearby places such as Pitts Hill and Bank Top. Little Chell is approximately 3.2 miles from Stoke-on-Trent city centre.

When our engineers arrive with you around Little Chell: what follows

  • Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • We drain that tank of the tainted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • When it is turned on, we make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

At that point it is ready to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Little Chell is a separate matter

The fault is not the same, though the opening instruction is — don't start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up instead.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Little Chell page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Little Chell

What shifts the price is laid out below, because the job is not one job and we cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much that tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Little Chell motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt in Little Chell. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's permission our engineers attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. It is salvageable far more frequently than people assume, even though driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. The tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to live with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with your car?

Never turn it on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the car remain that way. This is recoverable from much more frequently than people fear, and a parked, cold car is the best place to be in.
