Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Little Earnock

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a car needs while the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in Little Earnock or the remainder of South Lanarkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Contact us before anything else happens, so you will see what follows from there.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Never start the vehicle. Fired up regardless? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run, so the person stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off normally, for a few miles. Most people get that backwards. It isn't all right — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition alone.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Our team would rather drive to an awkward place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a vehicle that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Sunart Court, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts ML3 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, approximately how many litres, and also if the motor has started. Those three replies determine your whole job.

Quarter past eight, a fast fill on the trip in, and you realise around eleven — by which time your diesel Volkswagen Passat has been left outside Hamilton West for three hours. Ring us then leave the vehicle precisely where it is. The drive in is the part that matters most, as diesel does two roles on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those few miles were done with your pump working on a fuel that had shed most of the protection it is designed around — which is why the question our engineers ask is how far you went, not how long the car has been standing.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off at Aldi now. Time passed isn't the thing our engineers need. Fuel drawn by the pump is.

Twenty to nine by the local primary school, running late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, call us. Three miles in the Nissan Qashqai sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — and a frantic morning run needs plenty.

Our technicians clean the fuel lines rather than only emptying that tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already got to the fuel filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Audi A3 parked up close to Earnock Covenanter Memorial a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us then leave it off.

Put right and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: we flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there is a working one. Compare that with the certain suggestion you'll get — drain the vehicle, refill with new diesel. Half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Citroen C3 by Hillhouse Parish Church and it will start, which is precisely why the suggestion sounds reasonable. Then the engine pulls the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, as emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at the forecourt?

The work starts at a pump, typically. Regularly the work wraps up on site as well. We operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent, and so if you're still at BP that is generally where the drain gets done.

Before the motor has fired — a garage is the one place this is stopped. Fuel pulled out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our technicians put it right where the car is. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

The attendants will normally help you push the vehicle away from the pump so the next customer can get through. That's worth doing. Firing the car just for four car lengths? No.

Service near Little Earnock

Earnock, Laighstonehall, Fairhill, Meikle Earnock, Chantinghall — all of those on our trips that carry us across to Little Earnock too, a residential suburb.

Not on that list? It means nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and the majority of towns in South Lanarkshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Ring us to check rather than assuming, especially if you are on the border or anywhere your phone struggles with.

That map is the patch the page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is territory we serve, and none of it requires the vehicle to travel to us.

Little Earnock: stuck wherever you parked

The opportunity to pull in anywhere safe doesn't fall to everyone. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up along the verge of Sherry Drive, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Out of the car when it isn't safe to be there, with it when it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere handier and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. However difficult the location, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull over, then read below

Here is where your M74 comes in — under 3 miles away from Little Earnock. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and do not start the vehicle to move it. On a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you ring. It affects what our engineers bring.

Little Earnock itself

Little Earnock is a suburban area situated on the riverside in South Lanarkshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Little Earnock sits at an elevation of around 125 metres, close to the nearby communities of Earnock, Laighstonehall, and Fairhill. Little Earnock is located near Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, which is approximately 9 miles away. Little Earnock has a population of around 4702 residents.

What happens when our technicians get to you around Little Earnock

  • Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • We empty that tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what started the issue, and so your fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.
  • The system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and we check that it is running smoothly.

That has the car ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and since everything is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

Little Earnock AdBlue removal is a different job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor remains off — while the issue underneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Little Earnock page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Little Earnock

What shifts the figure is laid out below, as this job is not one job and we can't honestly put a single price on this page.

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Whether our van can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Little Earnock drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt in Little Earnock. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians work at Esso and the other forecourts around town routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the problem along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, because our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Your engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, and let it remain that way. A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists expect.
