Petrol in a Diesel Car in Little Eversden
Don't fire up the motor. If the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, all over Little Eversden and the rest of Cambridgeshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Our engineers shall tell you what the following stage is. Call us — it goes ahead of all else.
The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Never fire it up — and don't trust it if it does start. This is the thing people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just cannot run, and so the person stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for a few miles. It isn't all right. It's grinding your fuel system as you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for just those parts.
- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Finch's Field, anywhere — an odd location for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a vehicle that never shifted.
- A van showing up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning CB23 1, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Get both prepared before you phone.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has been run. Your replies determine whatever follows.
The drive in is what pushed diluted diesel through your pump. Standing still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, parked outside Shepreth all day, waits dormant in that tank whilst it waits. Ring us first — before your keys come out.
Petrol in your Skoda Octavia, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Waitrose, somewhere in Little Eversden? Then call us, and leave the motor out of it — not even to exit the space. A technician comes to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile draws hardly anything, so these are usually the easy ones.
You'll be advised to move it out of the gateway and fix it later. Don't. On the zig-zags at Haslingfield Endowed Primary School, a wrongly fuelled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Fire it up three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime draws more petrol through the filter towards your pump. Let them complain. Phone us.
Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres resting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mixture rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Nearly nobody knows how full the tank was in a car picked up two days ago, and our technicians work that out on site. Do phone the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to authorise the work, and that is far quicker settled before than after. Then call us about the Mercedes A-Class by Little and Great Eversden.
The filter, the lines, your pump and its rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the problem rests by this point, and a diesel BMW X1 that made it close to Meridian Marker needs your circuit purged rather than emptied.
Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel
Much of the job starts at a forecourt, which means a good share of that is completed at one. Still at Wilshers Garage? Then that is usually where it gets done. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.
Nowhere but a forecourt can the mistake be spotted with the engine still untouched. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys.
Staff will normally help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Welcome the help. Firing it over four car lengths? Don't.
Service around Little Eversden
Great Eversden, Harlton, Claypit Hill, Orwell, Comberton — each of those on our trips that take us out to Little Eversden too, a rural village.
There are dedicated pages for the majority of towns in Cambridgeshire, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list says nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come. Ring us to enquire rather than presuming — boundaries above all, and wherever your satnav can get wrong.
Check this map for the patch shown here. Your car never needs to come to us. We work across all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Little Eversden: stuck where you pulled up
Some drivers get no sensible spot to stop whatsoever. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up on the verge beside High Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a routine call for us instead of a rare one.
Out of the vehicle while it isn't wise to be in it, with it if it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere safer and that mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. Driving on causes the vehicle far more harm than a technician heading out to an awkward spot, and that's no problem for us.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?
under 5 miles out of Little Eversden, the local M11 is what counts now. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they arrive are usually a loss of power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.
Do not restart it to move it. Get off at the first sensible junction and turn off. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you phone. It changes what our technicians bring.

What we do when our technicians get to you around Little Eversden
- Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
- We clear your tank of the tainted mixture.
- What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the issue, and so your fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.
- Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- Our technicians start it and make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
From there, you are ready to pull away. Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been caught early, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Little Eversden is a distinct job
The problem isn't the same, though the opening step is — never fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.
Both are ours. There's a separate Little Eversden page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Little Eversden
We can't put one price on this page truthfully, because this job isn't one job. What changes it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?
The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. If it isn't time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Little Eversden
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Little Eversden?
A fair part of this work happens there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Pace is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It is salvageable far more frequently than drivers fear, even though driving is what takes the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.
Still with the car?
Switched off is how it stays.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
