Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Little Hungerford

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet turned over, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. Throughout Little Hungerford and the remainder of Berkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Call us and then we shall show you what follows next before you try much else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Never crank it — and never depend on it when it starts. Here is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel generally just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and pulls away just fine for a couple of miles. It's not fine. It is wearing the fuel system as you drive.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Never weaken it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Colyer Close, anywhere — an awkward place for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a motor that never shifted.
  • Before you phone, gather your location. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting RG18 9 — that is what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what was put in, approximately how much, and if the motor has been run. The responses decide everything that comes after.

Your high-pressure pump spent that morning commute working on a fuel that had given up a lot of the protection it is made for. Diesel greases that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of the fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So take a diesel Renault Megane, topped up at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked sitting at Newbury Racecourse until it dawns on you close to eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that changed a lot, which is why the question our technicians ask you is about mileage not hours. Call us. Keep it precisely where it stands.

The complicated part is the bay, not your fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height barrier on the way in that settles if a van can get to you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at Co-op Food, say how much clearance there's round you and which way round the vehicle is. Those we visit frequently. Should there be no room to work beside your diesel Volkswagen Passat, it gets rolled with your engine off, and not out of pedantry over a handful of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of the mixture exits the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a roomier bay have silently made a bigger job of what was merely a vehicle standing still.

You drive off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and made sure it runs properly on clean diesel, with your system primed. Before that, in the car park by The Fox Inn, the polluted fuel comes out of that tank, your lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Mercedes E-Class has a serviceable one. It all starts with three questions when our engineers get to your car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Out there normal, back flat. If that was the drive to Fence Wood, look at the tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the tight gaps supposed to build injection pressure — so every further mile your diesel Citroen C3 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, phone us.

What happens next is the problem. The motor at once sucks the petrol left sitting in your filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, somebody certain will tell you — and that advice is half right, because do it to a diesel BMW X3 parked up, Grimsbury Hill Fort say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Ring us instead. We flush the system and take the filter off where your vehicle has a serviceable one, and that is the difference between the car being repaired and your car just starting.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

The work begins at a forecourt, typically. Frequently the work ends at one as well. If you are still on the forecourt at Long Lane Garage, that is typically where the drain takes place — we work on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's permission.

At the forecourt, this gets stopped with the motor never started, and nowhere else manages that. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys decide how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

The attendants will usually happily wheel the car out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. That is worth doing. Firing it just to roll four car lengths is not.

Service in Little Hungerford

Being a rural village, Little Hungerford sees a routine visit, while the villages nearby go along on that same trip: Oare and Hermitage, Wellhouse and Eling, Longlane.

Our engineers still come. Those names above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most towns around Berkshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Guessing is the thing to avoid, particularly on a border or anywhere your satnav fails. Contact us and check.

The map outlines the ground this page spans. Every bit of that is ground our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.

Little Hungerford: stranded wherever you parked

A chance to pull over anywhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody. Set off, then noticed? Landed by the verge of Orchard Close, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards going? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Wait by the car if it's safe to sit inside, and out of it if it's not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to get to somewhere better and the blend goes further into the system with every mile travelled. Driving on causes the car far more harm than our van driving out to a tricky location, and that's no trouble for us.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The M4 is the one which matters now, and lies under a mile from Little Hungerford. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Suppose the worst of it on a long trip. Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

The job around Little Hungerford, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.
  • Away flows the tainted fuel.
  • Our engineers purge your fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what's left in the system isn't what created the issue.
  • Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • The engine is turned on and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to set off. There is no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it's spotted early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Little Hungerford AdBlue removal is a distinct job

The problem isn't the same, though the first step is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue instead.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Little Hungerford page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Little Hungerford

One number would not be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank can hold.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. If it is not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Little Hungerford drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Little Hungerford?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Often, provided the site consents: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our technicians answer on the spot.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and keep the car off. Driving shifts the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct fault. So no. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Still with your vehicle?

Do not turn your engine on again.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Emptying wrongly fuelled vehicles, Little Hungerford and the rest of Berkshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
