Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Little Layton? Don't Start It

Do not fire up the engine. If the petrol is still inside the tank and your engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, across Little Layton and the rest of Lancashire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Phone and then our engineers can show you what comes from here before you attempt anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Never fire it up — and never believe it when it does start. Here is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, ticks over and pulls away without complaint for a few miles. It's not okay. It is wearing out the fuel system while you drive.
  • Switching the ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A car that has never moved is the quickest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Shenstone Road? Hazards on, and keep the car there. A tricky location works for us better than a started motor.
  • Our van turning up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning FY3 7, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you dial.
  • What went in, roughly how much, and also if your car has run — the three answers determine the full call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

The work begins at a forecourt, generally. Often enough the work finishes there as well. We operate on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent, and so if you are still at Esso that is usually where the drain gets done.

A filling station is the single place it can be caught before your engine has started. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key.

The staff will generally offer to wheel the car clear of the pump so the next motorist can get past. That is worth doing. Cranking the car just to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Little Layton

Any start primes your fuel system and draws more of that mixture out of that tank and toward the pump — which is why a motor shunted twice into a better space has gradually grown into a bigger job than one left exactly where it stopped. So where our engineers can't work alongside your diesel Skoda Octavia, our engineers move it without firing it. None of that is pedantry about a few seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Lidl we attend regularly, and your fuel is rarely the tricky part: the bay is. Vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height limit at the way in determining whether a van reaches you at all. Tell us how penned in you are, and which way the car faces.

Three answers determine most of the work: what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we reach the car in the car park by Cask Micropub. Next the contaminated mix comes out of the tank, your lines are cleaned, and where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and your system bled, our engineers start the engine and make sure it runs correctly before you set off.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, parked by Layton Community House. For a diesel Mercedes E-Class whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Ring us, then let it stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get flushed and not just your tank drained.

Turn off where you have stopped, and don't restart it to find somewhere better — near Layton Library or anywhere at all. Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what's wrong.

Cleared, not cleared — that's what a diesel Citroen C3 which got as far as Christ The King needs. Running a diesel puts that blend into your filter, the lines, the pump and the rail, none of which empties with the tank, and so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

Service in Little Layton

Being a residential suburb, Little Layton has a steady visit, while the villages nearby go along on that same run: Layton and Hoohill, Queenstown and Warbreck, Normoss.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations in Lancashire, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours. Phone and enquire rather than presuming — boundaries particularly, and wherever your phone tends to struggle with.

This map shows the ground this page spans. Every bit of it is territory our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.

Stopped at the roadside somewhere around Little Layton?

The chance to stop anywhere safe doesn't come to everyone. Set off, then noticed? Landed by the verge beside Scorton Avenue, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Sit beside your car while it is sensible to sit inside, yet clear of it when it is not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the blend goes further into the system with every mile covered. However difficult the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that is much better for the car than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull over, and see below

Your M55 is the one which counts here, and sits under 3 miles from Little Layton. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. It changes what our technicians bring, so say so when you ring: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

A bit about Little Layton

Little Layton is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated near the coast and approximately 14 miles from Preston. Little Layton has a relatively low elevation of around 15 metres above sea level, and its proximity to the coast influences its local climate. Little Layton is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, which reflects the area's development as a residential suburb.

What our engineers do when our engineers arrive with you in Little Layton

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
  • Our engineers empty that tank of the polluted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • Your system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • Once it is turned on, our technicians make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to pull away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Little Layton?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas this issue under it is a different one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Little Layton page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Little Layton?

We cannot put one number on this page truthfully, since this job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • This is the big one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much that tank takes.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Whether our van can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Little Layton motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around Little Layton, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big part of this work takes place there, so yes. Our engineers visit Texaco and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the site's permission — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through the system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more regularly than drivers fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

Is your car still with you?

Leave it shut off.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists expect.
