Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Little Melton? Don't Start It

Never start the motor. If the petrol is still inside your tank and the motor has not run, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that is decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, throughout Little Melton and the rest of Norfolk, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. One ring our way is sufficient: we will show you what comes from here. Try this first.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for several miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't fire it up. And having started, do not trust it: your fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition remains off as well — turn it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for precisely those components.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies — so do not tip diesel on top to dilute it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has never moved is the easiest one to handle, and we'd rather drive to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Mill Road, put those hazards on and leave it there.
  • Our van showing up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning NR9 3, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Get both prepared before you ring.
  • Three replies decide the whole visit: the fuel you put in, the ballpark quantity of it, plus if anything has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

The drive back would about double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already put a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Golf. So leave the car where it is. Ring us from the platform if that's quicker — nobody needs you hovering over your car at Wymondham while we work, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.

Twenty to nine outside Little Melton Primary School, already late, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, call us. Three miles in your Peugeot 308 feels like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel on demand — and a hurried morning run needs plenty.

Emptying the Mercedes C-Class, changing the fuel filter where there is a usable one, rinsing the fuel lines, putting fresh fuel through the full system: that's this job, and it's shaped by the worst of that sitting in the lines instead of in your tank by this point. Three things help when you call from near Little Melton Village Hall — which side the filler is on, whether our van can park alongside without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest spot our technicians work, and so the location itself is rarely the problem. A cramped parking space is better than a car driven somewhere more convenient.

A motor you collected two days ago gets driven further before anyone spots anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the quantity of petrol reaching your injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck takes the narrower petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, and so unfamiliar locations see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, by War Memorial or not, and we'll get to the Kia Sportage.

Drain it and put fresh diesel in — that is the suggestion you will get, normally from somebody confident, and it's half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Skoda Superb near All Saints Church and it would start, which is what makes the tip sound reasonable. What happens next is the issue: the motor at once sucks the petrol still waiting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. Our technicians flush your circuit and take your filter off where the car has a workable one, which is the difference between the car being put right and the vehicle only starting.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the job usually starts, and where a big part of it finishes. We operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's permission, and so if you are still at Shell that is normally where this drain gets done.

At a garage, the mistake gets stopped with the engine never run, and no place else manages it. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key.

Attendants will normally chip in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Take the help. Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

Coverage in Little Melton

The same runs take us to Beckhithe, Bawburgh Hill, Hethersett, Bawburgh and Thickthorn Hall as well as Little Melton, which is a rural village.

If yours is not on that list that does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations in Norfolk, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours. Phone to ask instead of guessing — borders especially, and wherever a satnav might get wrong.

See the map for the patch included on this page. We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle never needs to move to us.

Stuck on the roadside near Little Melton

Not everybody has a sensible spot to pull over. If you noticed after setting off and landed by the verge on Ringwood Close, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a common call for us and not an unusual one.

Out of the motor when it's not safe to wait there, with it if it is. Don't start it up to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into the fuel system. A technician driving to a difficult location is no bother for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

This is where your M11 comes in — over 50 miles away from Little Melton. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Pull off at the next safe exit, turn off, and never start the car to reposition. Long trip? Anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in the van.

What happens when our engineers get to you in Little Melton

  • We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses change what the work really is.
  • We clear your tank of all the contaminated fuel.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what created the problem, so the fuel lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • Your engine is fired up and checked to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off. Our technicians do all of this wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been caught soon, it is very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Little Melton?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your motor remains off — while the problem under it's a different one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal around Little Melton has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. Our technicians handle both.

Little Melton prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One number would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. If it isn't pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Little Melton

I am on a forecourt in Little Melton. Can you drain it here?

A fair share of this work takes place there, so yes. Often, provided the site consents: Total, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our engineers answer there and then.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more commonly than people expect.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Leave it shut off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then let the car stay that way. This is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
