Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Little Preston?

If you have not turned on your engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a car needs while the petrol is still inside the tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Little Preston or the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Just one call to us is enough: our engineers will show you what comes from here. Make this first.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never crank it — and never trust it if it runs. Here is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel typically just cannot run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, ticks over and moves off without complaint for a couple of miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Don't add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Little Preston Hall? Hazards on, then keep it there. A tricky place works for us better than a started engine.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning LS26 8, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.
  • Three details determine your whole call-out: the fuel you put in, the ballpark measure involved, plus whether it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight. A fast top-up on the way in. Around eleven it hits you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood at Woodlesford for three hours. Ring us and leave the vehicle where it is. What counts is the drive in, as diesel both combusts and — before that — protects your pump and your injectors, whereas petrol only ever combusts. Those few miles ran the pump on a fuel robbed of a lot of its protection, and no volume of standing in a car park adds any of it back. Hence the thing we ask about distance rather than hours standing, and hence the advice to leave the keys alone until our engineers turn up.

You will be advised to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and fix it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags at Swillington Primary School, a misfilled Peugeot 308 running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Crank it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime pulls more petrol past your filter towards the pump. Let them complain. Ring us.

Here's the whole process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the ordinary Swillington park call — a diesel Mercedes C-Class, out there without fuss and back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it escapes past those clearances rather than building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than your engine was designed around. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about the diesel Ford Kuga near Swillington Village Hall. You'll not know how full the tank was. Barely anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out there all the same. We ask as the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine knocks and smokes and flattens off.

By now your tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that mixture goes into the fuel filter, into the fuel lines, into the pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Insignia that made it by Great & Little Preston Village Hall wants its circuit purged. Draining is not the same thing.

Draining petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

Much of the work begins at a pump, so a large share of that ends up finished at one. Still at Esso? Then that's generally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

At the forecourt, this is spotted with the motor never fired, and nowhere else manages that. Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key are what settle that.

Attendants will normally help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Take the offer. Firing it over four vehicle lengths? Never.

Service in Little Preston

Little Preston is a village, so we go out to it and to anywhere around it on the same runs: Swillington, Great Preston, Hollinthorpe, Swillington Common and Newsam Green.

Not on that list? That says nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and nearly all towns across West Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Phone to check instead of guessing — boundaries especially, and wherever the satnav may struggle with.

The patch this page covers appears on our map. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is territory our technicians work on, and none of that requires your car to move to us.

Stuck on the roadside anywhere around Little Preston?

Not everybody gets a suitable spot to stop. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up on the verge on Preston View, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that is a routine call for us instead of an unusual one.

Remain with the motor while it is wise to sit in it, yet clear of it if it isn't. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. However inconvenient the spot, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than pressing on.

Driven it already? Stop, and see below

Here is where the local M1 comes in, under 3 miles from Little Preston. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Suppose the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you phone. What our technicians bring alters.

All about Little Preston

Little Preston is a village situated on the riverside in West Yorkshire, with an elevation of 49 metres above sea level. Little Preston lies approximately 6 miles from Leeds and is surrounded by nearby places such as Swillington and Great Preston. Little Preston has a population of around 1239 residents, who mostly live in semi-detached housing. Little Preston is located near the urban edge, yet remains distinct from the larger city of Leeds.

What we do when we arrive with you in Little Preston

  • We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies shape what the work really is.
  • The contaminated fuel is drawn from that tank.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that created the problem.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The engine is started and tested to be sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

At that point it is ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and as everything is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Little Preston is a different problem

The issue is not the same, though the opening instruction is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Little Preston page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Little Preston

We cannot put one figure on this page honestly, because the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • This is the big one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much that tank takes.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel queries from Little Preston drivers

Fuel drains on a Little Preston petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a fair part of this work takes place. Often, provided the site agrees: Oakdale Garage, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our technicians answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. What decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the problem along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. The pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Shut off is how the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later. A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than motorists fear.
