Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Littledown?

Don't fire up the motor. If the fuel is still in the tank and your engine has not run, a drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets determined in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, all over Littledown and the rest of Dorset, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. We shall tell you what the next part is. Contact us — that goes ahead of all else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • As you drive, your pump and the injectors suffer. That's why you do not crank it, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part drivers get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime the system, which moves this petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel put on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A motor that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Harewood Avenue? Hazards on, then keep it there. An awkward spot suits us better than a started engine.
  • Keep your position ready before you call. A postcode that starts BH7 7 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van showing up and the van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how much, and also whether your car has started. Those three replies settle the whole visit.

Tonight, please, not Monday. Taking it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has put real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return trip would roughly double the figure to no gain. The Renault Megane can wait at Pokesdown perfectly well. Call from the platform if simpler; standing over us while our technicians work isn't needed.

We'll come to you, empty that tank, purge the fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can drive away. So if petrol went into the diesel Volkswagen Passat in Littledown and you are stranded outside Talard Thai with a boot full of shopping, phone us — and do not crank it again to get out of that spot. A mile or so at gentle throttle pulls hardly any diesel, so these are often the easy cases.

Twenty to nine at the gates of Avonwood Primary School, already late, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, ring us. Three miles in the BMW 3 Series seems like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel to demand — and a frantic morning dash needs plenty.

Do not risk it. The drive home from Queens Park Hotel is entirely possible, which is exactly the problem — a diluted tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the components your fuel is supposed to protect. Phone us, and let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it stands.

Our engineers purge the lines rather than only draining your tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already got to your filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance really helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Dacia Duster parked up close to East Cemetery Chapel a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Littledown

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where this job mostly starts, and where a large chunk of that closes. If you are still on the forecourt at Esso, that is normally where the drain gets done — we operate on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission.

Nowhere else but a garage can this be stopped with your motor still cold. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean your lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key.

Staff will generally help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get past. Take the help. Shifting it four lengths doesn't merit starting it.

Will our technicians cover your part of Littledown?

Littledown is a residential suburb, so our team head out to it and to the villages around it on the same journeys: Holdenhurst, Pokesdown, Haddon Hill, Townsend and Boscombe.

If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for the majority of towns in Dorset, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours. Phone and enquire rather than guessing — borders especially, and wherever the satnav can get wrong.

The ground the page covers is on this map. The vehicle never needs to move to us. Our technicians work across the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Littledown: stranded wherever you pulled up

Not everybody has the opportunity to pull over somewhere suitable. A routine call for us rather than a rare one: worked out after setting off, ended up on the verge on Littledown Avenue or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Safe where you are? Wait beside it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it. Don't start up your engine to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into the fuel system. Driving on causes the car far more harm than our van coming out to a tricky location, and that is no trouble for us.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where your M27 comes in — under 25 miles away from Littledown. Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next exit that's safe, pull up there, and do not start the car to move it. It changes what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

Where is Littledown?

Littledown is a coastal suburban area in Dorset, situated near the towns of Holdenhurst and Pokesdown, with Littledown being a predominantly residential community. Littledown has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are the most common, and Littledown is located at a relatively low elevation of 27 metres above sea level. Littledown is close to several nearby hills, including Haddon Hill, and Littledown is within easy reach of the city of Southampton, which is approximately 22 miles away.

What follows when our engineers reach you around Littledown

  • We check what went in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
  • The tank gets cleared of everything.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • Our technicians start it and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Littledown

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas this issue underneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Littledown page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Littledown

One price wouldn't be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the big one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel questions from Littledown drivers

At a petrol station around Littledown, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Often, provided the site agrees: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our engineers answer there and then.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. What settles how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more frequently than people expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it doesn't restore what petrol has diluted. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Still with your car?

Do not switch the car back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
