Petrol in Diesel

Littletown: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never turn on your engine. If the petrol is still inside your tank and the engine has not yet run, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets determined in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, all over Littletown and the rest of Devon, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Our engineers shall tell you what the next step is. Phone — this goes ahead of all else.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine enough for a couple of miles. People have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start the vehicle. And once started, don't trust it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for precisely those parts.
  • Never thin it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and our team would rather get to a tricky location than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Yallop Way, put those hazards on then keep it there.
  • Know where you are before phoning. A postcode starting EX14 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has started. Those three replies determine the whole visit.

Do not drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through the injection pump in real quantity on the road in, and the trip back would about double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is okay. There's no need to stand over your Renault Megane outside Honiton whilst the work happens, and we would very much rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.

Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have seemed perfectly normal on the way back from Littletown Primary Academy. They all do, and that's the snag with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it mostly won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and moves off as though nothing has happened — all while your high-pressure pump does its work without the protection the fuel is supposed to be providing. Nothing tells you, since from the driver's seat there is nothing to warn you about. Call us with about how far you travelled and how hard you pushed it; the second answer matters more than the first.

Three answers decide much of the work: what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them as soon as we get to the car in the car park by The Holt. After that the contaminated mix comes out of that tank, the fuel lines are cleaned, and where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After new diesel is in and the system primed, we fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before you drive away.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision components it passes through, and petrol weakens it. That is the whole mechanism, and it accounts for the usual Roundball Wood call: a diesel Ford Focus that drove out there without fuss and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires your fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when your fuel dilutes, pressure that should build and stay built starts leaking past tolerances instead, and the motor gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed about. No part of that is your engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

By this point that tank is not where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in your filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Kia Sportage that got by Honiton Library needs the circuit flushed, not drained.

Draining petrol from your diesel on a forecourt

The job kicks off at a forecourt, mostly. Quite often the work ends on site too. The drain usually takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the site's consent, that's a spot our engineers work, and routinely.

Nowhere except a forecourt can the mistake be caught with your motor still cold. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key settle how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where the car is.

Wheel it out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next customer gets by the pump, and that is worth doing. Starting it just to move four vehicle lengths isn't.

Littletown plus the places next to it

Heathfield Camp, Heathpark, Honiton, Hamlet, Weston — each of them on the rounds that carry us across to Littletown as well, a residential suburb.

Our technicians do come. Those names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most towns around Devon, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Guessing is the thing to resist, particularly on a border or somewhere your phone goes wrong. Contact us to enquire.

This map is the patch this page includes. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and your car doesn't need to come to us.

Stuck by the kerb anywhere around Littletown?

Not everybody has the opportunity to pull over somewhere sensible. If you worked it out after setting off and landed on the verge beside Dove Close, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that's a routine call for us rather than a rare one.

Clear of the car while it isn't sensible to be inside, beside it when it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere handier and that blend goes further into the system with every mile travelled. Our van driving to an inconvenient spot is no bother for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

This is where the M5 comes into it — under 10 miles from Littletown. A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are normally a loss of power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Don't restart it to move it. Get off at the first safe exit then switch off. Long trip? Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in the van.

About Littletown

Littletown is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Devon, with a mix of semi-detached housing and a population of around 4898 residents. Littletown sits at an elevation of 124 metres, approximately 15 miles from Exeter and 142 miles from London. Littletown is located near other local places such as Heathfield Camp, Heathpark, and Honiton, and is part of the wider South West region.

What happens when we arrive with you in Littletown

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.
  • The polluted mixture is drawn out of your tank.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Once it's started, our technicians confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Littletown?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — while the fault under it is a separate one altogether. Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the lubrication the system depends on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Littletown page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Littletown

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what changes it:

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a van.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run. If it's not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Littletown motorists

Fuel drains on a Littletown petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the site's agreement our technicians work at BP and the other forecourts around town regularly.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the issue along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, emptying and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, because our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Is your car still with you?

That engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. A stationary, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than people assume.
