Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Llanblethian? Don't Start It

Don't fire up your engine. While the fuel is still in your tank and the motor has not yet been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that is determined in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, all over Llanblethian and the remainder of The Vale of Glamorgan, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Call us and our team will tell you what happens after that before you do any more.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Started anyway? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol car normally will not run, and so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off happily, for several miles. Drivers get that reversed. It isn't okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition off as well: flicking it on is usually enough to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into just those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so don't add diesel on top to thin it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A motor that has not shifted is the simplest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on The Causeway? Hazards on, and keep the car there. A difficult place works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Get your position prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts CF71 7 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van showing up and a van circling.
  • What went in, about how much, and also whether the car has started — the three details shape the full visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Phone before you move the car. Petrol into a diesel Renault Clio this morning, and the car outside Llantwit Major ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is dormant, and any harm came on the journey in, when your pump was taking diesel that petrol had weakened.

Your Audi A4 stays where it is in the car park outside The Cross Inn for the whole job, which usually runs like this. First our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since, because much of the work turns on those replies. The tank is emptied of the polluted blend, the lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it is a replaceable one. With new diesel in and the system bled, the vehicle is started and checked, and once it is running smoothly you pull away.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built bleeds past clearances instead, leaving your engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built about. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting components it runs through — that's the entire process. It accounts for the normal Coed Gribs call too: a diesel BMW 5 Series that drove out without fuss and came back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and parked your diesel Mercedes A-Class up near St John the Baptist a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us then leave the car off. The short distance really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so diluted fuel has arrived at the filter and your pump — which is why we purge the fuel lines instead of only clearing your tank.

Somebody confident will tell you to drain the vehicle and put new diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Volkswagen Touran near St. Cadoc's and the motor will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here is the catch: there's petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is draw it back through the pump a second time. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. Your system gets rinsed, your filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a repaired vehicle from one that just starts.

On the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

It begins at a forecourt, generally. Frequently the work wraps up there too. Still at Esso? Then that is normally where it happens. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the site.

Before the engine has started — the forecourt is the one location this is stopped. We can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

Wheel the car out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that's worth doing. Rolling the car four lengths does not warrant firing the engine.

Llanblethian plus the places near it

These same trips carry us to West Village, East Village, Cowbridge, Llandoche and The Herberts as well as Llanblethian, which is a residential suburb.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all places in The Vale of Glamorgan, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours. Assuming is the habit to resist, especially on a border or anywhere your phone gets lost. Phone to ask.

The map shows the area this page spans. We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and the car does not need to travel to us.

Kerbside call-outs in Llanblethian

The chance to stop anywhere safe doesn't come to everybody. Set off, then twigged? Landed on the verge of Church Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Fine right there? Wait by it. Not okay? Step out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. Driving on causes the car far more harm than a technician driving out to a difficult spot, and that is no problem for us.

Run it already? Stop, then read this

under 5 miles out of Llanblethian, the M4 is what counts now. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are normally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Take the first junction that is sensible, pull up there, and do not start the vehicle to reposition. It changes what we bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

Where is Llanblethian?

Llanblethian has a population of around 1305 people and predominantly features detached housing.

When our technicians arrive with you around Llanblethian: what we do

  • The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
  • Our engineers clear that tank of all the tainted fuel.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that caused the issue.
  • Our technicians pour new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • It is run with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running properly.

From that point, you are ready to set off. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted early, and because all of it is done where your car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Llanblethian?

Never fire it up: that first step applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue in its place.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Llanblethian has its own page with the full story — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Llanblethian

What shifts the price is listed below, because the job is not one job and we can't honestly put a single number on this page.

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank holds.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel queries from Llanblethian drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Llanblethian?

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement our technicians work at Murco and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more often than drivers assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Leave it turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
