Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Llandovery?

Don't turn on the engine. If the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Llandovery and the remainder of Carmarthenshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Our engineers will show you what the following step will be. Ring us — this comes before anything else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Do not start the car. Fired up regardless? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. Motorists get that backwards. It is not all right — that fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Turning your ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition off.
  • Do not put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it just hands you a larger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Stone Street? Hazards on, then leave it there. An odd location works for us better than a started engine.
  • A van turning up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning SA20 0, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you ring.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how many litres, plus if the car has run. These three facts determine your whole job.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning run running on a fuel that had given up much of the protection it is built around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of your fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So take a diesel Volkswagen Golf, filled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left sitting outside the nearest station till it dawns on you somewhere around eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that changed a good deal, which is why the question our technicians ask you is about miles instead of time. Ring us. Leave the vehicle right where it is.

Car parks like the one at The Co-operative Food are a place we work in all the time, and your fuel is seldom the complicated part. The bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height barrier on the way in that settles if a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you ring, and which way the vehicle is facing. If our engineers cannot work next to the diesel Renault Megane we will roll the car without firing it — and that's not pedantry about a few seconds of running. Any start primes that fuel system and sucks more of that mix out of the tank and on to your pump, and so a motor shunted twice into a roomier bay has quietly turned into a bigger job than one left precisely where it stopped.

Never chance it. The drive home from The Greyhound is quite possible, which is precisely the problem — a diluted tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the components your fuel is meant to lubricate. Phone, and let the BMW 3 Series stay where it sits.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted components it passes through, and petrol dilutes it. That's the entire mechanism, and it accounts for the normal Llandovery RFC call: a diesel Audi A4 that drove out there without a murmur and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when your fuel thins, pressure that should build and stay built starts bleeding past gaps instead, and the motor gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. None of that is the motor failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is corrected.

Fixed and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: our engineers flush it, and take your filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the confident tip you will get — drain it, refill with new diesel. Half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Citroen C3 by Hiraeth Gallery and it'll start, which is precisely why the advice sounds plausible. Then the engine draws the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, because draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

Forecourts are where the work often kicks off, and where a large chunk of it closes. Still at Oil4Wales? Then that is generally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the station.

Nowhere else other than the forecourt can the mistake be halted with the motor still untouched. Our technicians can still put it right where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from the tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys are what determine that.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Service near Llandovery

Siloh, Myrtle Hill, Myddfai, Pentre-ty-gwyn, Cilycwm — all of them on our journeys that take us across to Llandovery too, a riverside town.

If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for the majority of towns in Carmarthenshire, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours. Call us and ask instead of presuming — boundaries above all, and wherever your phone can misread.

This map is the ground this page includes. We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and your car does not need to come to us.

Llandovery: stranded where you pulled up

Not everyone gets a sensible spot to pull in. A common call for us rather than a rare one: worked out after setting off, ended up on the verge beside Adelaide Street or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Fine where you are? Sit with it. Not safe? Step out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Driving on causes your car far more harm than a van heading out to an inconvenient spot, and that is no problem for us.

Driven it already? Stop, then read below

Here is where the local M4 comes in — under 25 miles away from Llandovery. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't start it to reposition. Pull off at the first sensible junction then turn off. On a longer trip — anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.

Where is Llandovery?

Llandovery is a small town in Carmarthenshire, situated on the River Towy at an elevation of around 67 metres. Llandovery lies near several smaller communities, including Siloh and Myddfai, and is approximately 26 miles north of Swansea. Llandovery has a mix of housing types, with semi-detached homes being particularly common. Llandovery is located in a scenic area, with the town's riverside setting and surrounding countryside making it a pleasant place to live.

What happens when we get to you around Llandovery

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
  • Away flows the tainted fuel.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that created the trouble.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • When it's turned on, our technicians confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away. All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, long-term damage is very rare.

A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Llandovery

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — do not start the car — yet this issue isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Llandovery page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Llandovery pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the figure is set out below, because this job is not one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Llandovery

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Llandovery?

A good portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our technicians answer there and then.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. It's recoverable much more commonly than motorists assume, even though driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct problem. So no. The pump still has to cope with it, as your tank still has petrol in it after that.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and your car, still together?

The motor remains off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
