Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Llanfach? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Llanfach and the remainder of Caerphilly. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When your engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still inside your tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in. A single call to us will be sufficient: our engineers shall explain what follows from here. Do it straight away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never start it. And having started, don't trust it: the fuel system is grinding as you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off also — turn it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for precisely those parts.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Our team would rather travel to a difficult place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on Penrhiw Terrace, that means hazards on then keep it.
  • Before you call, get your position. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts NP11 5 — that is what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Three details shape your whole job: the liquid you put in, the rough quantity of it, and if anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight, a hurried fill-up on the trip in, and you realise close to eleven — by then the diesel Volkswagen Passat has been sitting at Newbridge for three hours. Phone us and leave it just where it stands. The run in is the thing that matters most, as diesel performs two tasks on its way through the engine: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates its injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were driven with the pump working on a fluid that had given up most of the protection it is built around — which is why the question our technicians ask is how far you travelled, not how long your car has been stood.

We'll come to you, clear your tank, rinse the fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can drive away. So if petrol went into your diesel Renault Clio around Llanfach and you're stuck at Sainsbury's with a boot full of shopping, phone us — and do not fire it up once more to exit the spot. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses little diesel, so these are usually the easy cases.

Don't risk it. The journey home from Market Tavern is perfectly possible, which is precisely the problem — a diluted tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the components the fuel is meant to protect. Ring us, then let the Peugeot 308 stay where it is.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel seeps past the tightly fitted components that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the further a diesel Mercedes E-Class travelled, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how that run to Cwmcarn Memorial Gardens went, then, and that tank is the place to look. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off and phone us.

Somebody sure of themselves will tell you to drain it then put clean diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso by Abercarn Library and the engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here's the trouble: there's petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is draw it back through your pump once more. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. The system gets purged, the fuel filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired car from one that just starts.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

A big part of the job is completed at the pump, since that is where it mostly begins. Still at Texaco? Then that is normally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Before your engine has started — a forecourt is the single setting the mistake is halted. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys.

The attendants will usually offer to wheel it clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get through. It is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Llanfach and the areas beside it

Being a residential suburb, Llanfach gets a frequent visit, while the areas close by go along on the same journey: Gwyddon and Persondy, Abercarn and Celynen, West End.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for most places in Caerphilly, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. Ring us to ask instead of assuming — county lines especially, and anywhere your phone may struggle with.

The area this page covers sits on our map. The vehicle doesn't need to come to us. We operate throughout every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stopped at the roadside anywhere in Llanfach?

Some people get no suitable place to pull in at all. A routine call for us instead of an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up on the verge of Twyn Road or in a lay-by with your hazards going.

Whether you sit beside the motor or move clear of it hangs on whether being there is safe. Never fire up the engine to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the blend further into the fuel system. We will send the van to an awkward place without any trouble, and for the car that's far better than carrying on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M4 comes into it — under 10 miles from Llanfach. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Pull off at the next safe exit, switch off, and don't start it to reposition. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our technicians bring changes.

Where's Llanfach?

Llanfach lies close to the nearby communities of Gwyddon, Persondy, and Abercarn, and is approximately 7 miles from Newport. Llanfach has a population of around 2521 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Llanfach is also within commuting distance of major cities, being around 129 miles from London.

What our technicians do when we arrive with you in Llanfach

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The tainted fuel comes out of your tank.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that created the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It's run with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running properly.

From that point, you're ready to set off. We do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

Llanfach AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

The issue isn't the same, though the first instruction is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and residue.

AdBlue removal around Llanfach has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Llanfach

One figure would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Llanfach drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Llanfach?

A good part of this work gets done there, so yes. Often, provided the site consents: Sainsbury's, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something we answer on the spot.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. What settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through the system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. It is recoverable much more often than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it does not put back what petrol has weakened. Your pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

You, and your car, still together?

Leave it shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. This is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists expect, and a still, cold car is the best position to be in.
