Petrol in Diesel

Llanharry: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor requires while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has come to rest in Llanharry or the remainder of Rhondda Cynon Taf, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Call us before all else begins, so you will hear what follows next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Don't crank it. Started anyway? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a couple of miles. People get that reversed. It is not fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes — so don't add diesel on top to thin it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A car that has never moved is the easiest one to sort, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Appletree Close? Hazards on, and leave it there. A tricky location works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning CF72 9, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what went in, approximately how many litres, and if the engine has been turned over. Your replies determine whatever happens next.

Tonight, please, not Monday. Taking it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has sent real quantity through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return journey would roughly double the figure to no end. The Volkswagen Golf can sit outside Llanharan perfectly safely. Ring from the platform if easier; standing over us while our technicians work is not needed.

Petrol in your Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Londis, somewhere around Llanharry? Then ring us, and leave your engine out of that — not even to leave the space. Somebody heads your way. Tank drained, fuel lines purged, new diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile draws little, and so these are often the easy cases.

What our technicians will ask about is if that run there was short and chilly, as that is where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and anything that won't burn can get past the rings then into the engine oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Nissan Qashqai standing in the car park by The Bear Inn carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing deteriorates while it stands, so park the vehicle there overnight and phone next morning.

Most of these occur somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical not slapdash — practically no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Audi A6, a fill-up near Ystradowen Village Hall that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at the injectors.

Cleared, not drained — that is what a diesel Citroen C3 which got as far as Bryncae Community Centre needs. Running a diesel puts that mix into your filter, the lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with that tank, so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the trouble.

At a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

A large chunk of the work is done at a pump, since that's where it usually kicks off. If you're still at the forecourt at Murco, that's typically where the drain happens — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.

A forecourt is the single place the mistake is spotted before your motor has run. The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and our engineers can still sort it out where the car sits.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next driver gets past the pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Coverage around Llanharry

Llanharry is a rural village, and our vans are out to it and to the places by it on those same journeys: Degar, Ton-Breigam, Tyle-garw, Brynsadler and Dolau.

If yours is not on that list that does not mean we do not come — there are pages for the majority of places in Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours. Ring us to check rather than guessing, above all when you are on a border or anywhere your phone can't find.

The patch this page spans is on our map. We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle does not need to move to us.

Kerbside breakdowns across Llanharry

Some people find no suitable spot to stop at all. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Aelfryn because you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Clear of the vehicle while it's not safe to wait in it, beside it if it is. Never start up your engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into your fuel system. However inconvenient the location, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that is much better for your car than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has moved

The M4 is the one which matters now, and sits under a mile from Llanharry. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they come are typically a drop in power, a rough idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in our van.

Once our engineers reach you in Llanharry: what we do

  • We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies change what the work really is.
  • Our engineers clear your tank of the tainted fuel.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so your fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Our engineers put clean diesel in and prime the system.
  • We fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That has it ready to pull away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Llanharry is a separate problem

The fault is not the same, though the opening instruction is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Llanharry page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Llanharry?

What shifts the figure is laid out below, since this job isn't one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. If it's not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Llanharry motorists

Fuel drains on a Llanharry petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this happens. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable much more regularly than people fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Turned off is the way the car remains.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and let the vehicle stay that way. This is recoverable from far more commonly than people expect, and a parked, cold motor is the best place to be in.
