Petrol in Diesel

Loanhead: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never start the engine. While the fuel is still inside that tank and the engine has not yet been started, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's decided in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, across Loanhead and the remainder of Renfrewshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Contact us before anything else begins, so you will learn what happens next.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Do not fire it up — and never believe it if it starts. That is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just won't run, and so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for several miles. It's not fine. It's grinding that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel performs two roles: it ignites, and before it burns it protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime the system, which moves the petrol out of that tank and into just those components.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on East Avenue, anywhere — a difficult place for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a motor that never moved.
  • Before you call, work out your position. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts PA4 0 — that's what settles whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • What was put in, roughly how much, and also if the car has started — those three answers decide the entire visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Removing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

The work begins at a forecourt, usually. Quite often the work finishes there too. The drain usually gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the station's consent, that is a place our technicians work, and routinely.

Before the engine has started — a forecourt is the one place it ends up spotted. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key determine how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where the car sits.

Roll the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next driver gets past the pump, and that's worth doing. Shifting the car four bays doesn't justify cranking it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Loanhead

Service in Loanhead

Loanhead is a residential suburb, and our vans head out to the town and to the places near it on those same rounds: Victory Gardens, Newmains, Renfrew, Moorpark and Porterfield.

There are dedicated pages for most towns in Renfrewshire, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing at all about whether our engineers come. Near a boundary, or somewhere your satnav can't find? Ring us to ask rather than assuming.

Use our map for the patch included on this page. We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and your car doesn't need to move to us.

Shift the car out of that gateway and deal with it later — that is what somebody will say, and it is wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags outside the local primary school, a misfuelled diesel Peugeot 308 is a hassle and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for courtesy, it is no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, because priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes past the fuel filter towards the pump. Let everyone grumble. Call us.

Do not risk it. The drive home from The Kind Man's is perfectly possible, which is precisely the problem — a thinned tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the parts your fuel is supposed to protect. Ring us, then let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it is.

Nothing gets worse while it waits. Whatever the diesel Audi A4 did on the way to Alexandra Park, it is doing none of that now: your pump isn't turning. So take your time — but don't drive the car home to buy yourself any.

Your pump rests before the injectors, and so whatever a worn one sheds moves on with your fuel — which is why we are direct about not driving on. Call us, then leave your diesel Dacia Duster where it is by St Margaret.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that mixture goes into the fuel filter, into your lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel BMW 1 Series that got close to Workers Memorial Cairn wants its system flushed. Clearing is not the same thing.

Kerbside stops across Loanhead

Not everyone gets a safe place to pull in. If you worked it out after setting off and landed along the verge of West Avenue, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a common call for us rather than a rare one.

Safe where you are? Wait with it. Not safe? Get out and away from it. Do not fire up your engine to limp the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into the system. Carrying on does the car far more harm than our van coming out to an awkward location, and that is no problem for us.

Driven it already? Pull over, and see below

This is where the local M8 matters, under a mile out of Loanhead. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Do not start it to move it. Come off at the first safe exit and turn off. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It changes what we bring.

Loanhead itself

Loanhead sits at a low elevation of around 9 metres, in the gently sloping landscape of the Scottish lowlands. Loanhead is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing, which reflects the urban expansion of the surrounding area. Loanhead is located close to nearby places such as Victory Gardens and Newmains, and is about 6 miles from Glasgow city centre.

What follows when our technicians get to you around Loanhead

  • The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and if your motor has run.
  • Your tank gets emptied completely.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what caused the problem, and so your fuel lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • After it is fired up, our technicians check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. We do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, it is very rare for there to be long-term damage.

Loanhead AdBlue removal is a different matter

The issue is not the same, though the opening instruction is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and build-up in its place.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Loanhead has its own page with the detail — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Loanhead

One number wouldn't be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel queries from Loanhead motorists

I'm on a forecourt around Loanhead. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers attend JET and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving moves the trouble along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and the car, still together?

Don't turn the car back on.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and parked, a car is in the best place available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
