Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Loans? Don't Start It

With the tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is determined in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Loans and the remainder of South Ayrshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Our engineers can tell you what the next step will be. Ring us — this goes ahead of everything else.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear. This is why you don't crank it, and why you never believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit people get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel does two roles: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, which pulls that petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A motor that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort out, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Old Loans Road? Hazards on, then leave it there. A difficult location works for us better than a started engine.
  • A van turning up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning KA10 7, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you call.
  • What got in, approximately how many litres, and if the motor has run — the three replies settle your whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

On the forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

A big share of the work gets done at a forecourt, because that is where it mostly kicks off. Still at Esso? Then that is typically where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the site.

Before your motor has fired — a garage is the one spot this gets stopped. Fuel pulled out of your tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That's still not a calamity, and our technicians deal with it where your car is. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

The staff will usually happily move the car clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. It is worth doing. Moving it four spaces doesn't merit starting the motor.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Loans

Petrol in your BMW 3 Series, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you outside The Co-operative Food, somewhere in Loans? Then ring us, and leave your engine out of it — not even to leave the space. Somebody comes out to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines rinsed, clean diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile uses hardly anything, so these tend to be the straightforward jobs.

Nothing tells you, because from behind the wheel there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Dacia Duster will have felt completely normal on the way back from the local primary school, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel rather than the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car usually refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, idles, pulls away as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump does its work without the protection its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

You drive off at the end, once we have fired it up and confirmed it runs properly on new diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park by the pub in the village, the contaminated fuel comes out of that tank, the lines get rinsed and the filter comes off where your Mercedes E-Class has a replaceable one. It all begins with three questions when our engineers reach the vehicle: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Ringing from close to War Memorial? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it's on. Room for our van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself barely matters: on-street is where our engineers work most, and we'd much rather have a tight space than a motor somebody has driven somewhere quicker. Then it is a drain for the Vauxhall Astra, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, fresh fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in the fuel lines and not that tank.

The fuel filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with your tank contents. So that tank isn't where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Citroen C3 that made it close to Harpercroft Hillfort needs your system purged rather than cleared.

Coverage around Loans

Those same journeys bring us to Collennan, Muirhead, Laigh Hillhouse, Barassie and Frognal as well as Loans, which is a coastal village.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for most towns across South Ayrshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours. Assuming is the thing to resist, above all on a boundary or somewhere the satnav gets lost. Contact us to enquire.

The map marks the ground this page includes. The lot is ground we serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not move the vehicle anywhere.

Broken down by the kerbside near Loans

Not everybody gets a safe spot to pull in. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Fullarton Place as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Clear of the vehicle when it is not safe to wait inside, by it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. We'll take our van to a difficult place without any bother, and for the vehicle that is much better than driving on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where the local M77 comes in — under 10 miles away from Loans. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power drains away, the idle gets lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you call. What we bring changes.

A bit about Loans

Loans is a small coastal village in South Ayrshire, situated near the towns of Troon and Prestwick, with a mix of rural and seaside environments. Loans sits at an elevation of 27 metres, looking out to the Firth of Clyde, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Loans is part of a network of small villages and hamlets, including Collennan and Muirhead, in the rural landscape of South Ayrshire.

What happens when we get to you around Loans

  • Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Away goes the polluted mixture.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that created the trouble.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The motor is started and checked to be sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any point, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is caught early, long-term damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Loans is a different job

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — don't crank it — yet the fault is not. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal in Loans has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our technicians handle both.

Loans prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One price wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much that tank takes.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if our van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel queries from Loans motorists

Fuel drains on a Loans petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a big part of this work happens. Our technicians work at Morrisons and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters far more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been drawn through the fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more often than drivers expect.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it does not restore what petrol has diluted. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Shut off is how the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers expect.
