Lochardil: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a moment, and not to move it: your motor remains off. Pause there. Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is typically a drain and a flush, done right where your vehicle stands, and what happens in the coming few minutes settles that more than anything else. What follows is the order from this point, anywhere in Lochardil you are.

Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

Go through the following in order, before you do anything else.

  • Take your keys out. Even the ignition by itself can prime the fuel system, pulling petrol out of your tank to exactly the components it harms, and so leave it alone entirely.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of the petrol — it just leaves you with more of the same mixture.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then the hazard lights go on before anything else, so the vehicle is easy to see.
  • Off the pump by hand. At a forecourt, ask the attendants to help you push it clear of the pump. Do not fire it up to shift it, however short the way.
  • Hold on to the receipt. It says which fuel went in and about how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

Still on the move when you noticed? Come off the M90 at the next junction if that's where you are, over 50 miles from Lochardil, and pull over somewhere sensible rather than pressing on to the services. Then begin at stage one.

The fork in every Lochardil fuel drain: has it run yet?

From this point on, everything comes down to a single answer.

Motor not run at all?

  • Just that tank has petrol in it for now.
  • Normally it's drained and cleaned right where the vehicle stands.
  • This is the best case — which is the entire point of step one.

Engine run, however briefly?

  • Petrol has been pulled from your tank, past the filter then into the lines.
  • On a longer run it has reached your high-pressure pump as well as the injectors.
  • Distance is what turns it into a larger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates your high-pressure pump as well as the injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't. Nothing is harmed by petrol that's just sitting in a tank. Petrol being pumped is wearing the components that move the car.

Calling about petrol in a diesel from Lochardil: what to have prepared

Whether the technician circles or finds you comes down to a little preparation.

  • IV2 4 and the rest of the postcode makes the best way to start telling us where you are.
  • Name the road — Balnakyle Road or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.
  • Or the landmark. A car park is quicker to find by what it serves, such as the one at Asda.
  • The vehicle. Make, model, and that it's a diesel.
  • What was put in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a different job with its own page for Lochardil, and so tell us which.
  • How much. Litres from your receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.
  • The miles it covered, and how hard, if it ran at all.
  • Whose motor it is. Some hire and company contracts want the owner to authorise the work, and that is easier settled before our engineers get there than after.

Ring 0333 366 0103 next. Email works too if it can wait, with your car parked at home, going nowhere.

Whilst you wait for a fuel drain in Lochardil

In the wait, the damage comes from well-meant help — so these matter.

  • Where the vehicle has stopped settles where you wait. Exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety before the car.
  • Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a couple of yards.
  • None of it gets that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from your boot. So no additives.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is hazardous — and it still leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond that tank. Don't try a home-made drain.
  • The ignition stays off. Even for the radio or your windows.

When our van gets there: the fuel drain, step by step

  • Three queries. What got in, how much, and whether it's run. The answers decide the job, which is why the price comes after them and not before.
  • Your tank is emptied. The tainted mixture comes out of the tank.
  • Petrol that has moved beyond the tank travels in your lines if it ran, and the fuel lines are purged to clear it.
  • Where your car has a serviceable filter, it's replaced; if not, cleared.
  • Clean diesel in, and the system primed.
  • The first start on new diesel. When priming is finished, the engine is fired up and we make sure that it runs correctly.

Our engineers remain until it is running on clean diesel. Permanent damage is very unusual if it has been caught early, so the vehicle can go straight back to normal use.

After your fuel drain is done: driving around Lochardil once more

  • Once it's been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing special to do: drive normally.
  • The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your signal to stop then call us a second time.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was done, so hold on to the documents.
  • The handle's colour is not the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
