Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lochside?

Do not start the motor. If the fuel is still in that tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Lochside and the rest of Dumfries and Galloway, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Our engineers can explain what your next part is. Contact us — it goes ahead of anything else.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Started regardless? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally cannot run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for several miles. People get that muddled. It's not okay — the fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the ignition stays off too — turn it on and you often prime your system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for exactly those components.
  • Don't thin it. Diesel tipped on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and we would much rather get to a tricky place than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Kindar Drive, put the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
  • Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts DG2 9, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.
  • Three answers shape your whole call-out: the fuel you poured in, the ballpark amount of it, plus whether it has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

The journey back would more or less double it, for no purpose at all. One commute has already pushed a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Renault Clio. So leave the vehicle where it stands. Ring us from the platform if that's quicker — nobody needs you standing over the car outside Dumfries while our technicians get on, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.

You head off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and checked it runs correctly on new diesel, with the fuel system primed. Before that, in the car park at the pub in the village, the contaminated fuel comes out of the tank, the lines get flushed and the filter comes off where your Dacia Duster has a replaceable one. It all begins with three questions when our engineers get to the car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision parts it passes through, and petrol thins it. That is the whole process, and it accounts for the usual Barnhill Wood call: a diesel BMW 5 Series that travelled out there without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires your fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when your fuel weakens, pressure that should build then stay built starts leaking past tolerances instead, and the engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. None of that is the motor failing, which is the part worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, an uneven idle, clattering: that's a misfilled diesel Audi A6 telling you what is wrong. Never restart the car to find a better place — turn off where you have stopped, by Dumfries Northwest Parish Church or anywhere else.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle uneven, and the diesel Ford Kuga is parked up close to The Lincluden Rhino. The motor is not giving up — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so vehicles like yours normally get driven a second time before anyone picks up the phone. Do not. Off, and phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Lochside

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Much of this job begins at a forecourt, meaning a good chunk of that gets done on site. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is generally where it happens. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.

Nowhere other than a forecourt can this be halted with your engine still unrun. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys.

Wheel it out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Firing the car just to shift four car lengths isn't.

Can we reach your end of Lochside?

Lochside is a residential suburb, and our technicians get out to the town and to the villages near it on the same trips: Lochfield, Newbridge, Lincluden, Summerville and Terregles.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are pages for nearly all places across Dumfries and Galloway, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Contact us and ask instead of assuming, particularly if you are on the boundary or somewhere the satnav struggles with.

That map shows the patch this page covers. The car doesn't need to come to us. We operate across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded at the roadside somewhere in Lochside?

Some drivers get no suitable spot to pull in whatsoever. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Merrick Place because you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Out of the vehicle when it is not safe to be inside, by it if it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to reach somewhere handier and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. A van driving to an inconvenient place is no trouble for us, and it is far better for the car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

This is where the A74(M) comes in — under 15 miles away from Lochside. A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are generally lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

Take the next exit that is sensible, pull up there, and do not restart the car to reposition. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Say so when you phone. What we bring differs.

All about Lochside

Lochside is a suburban area in Dumfries and Galloway, situated near the coast but inland at an elevation of 28 metres. Lochside lies close to several nearby communities, including Lochfield, Newbridge, and Lincluden, and is approximately 31 miles from Carlisle. Lochside has a population of around 2542 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Lochside is also relatively distant from major cities like London, being around 286 miles away.

What we do when we reach you in Lochside

  • Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • Out comes the contaminated mixture.
  • What is left in your system shouldn't be what started the problem, so the lines get flushed and the filter cleaned.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running correctly.

After that it is ready to pull away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Lochside

The issue is not the same, though the first instruction is — never crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Lochside page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Lochside prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What shifts the price is laid out below, as the job isn't one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and if it has run. If it is not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Lochside motorists

At a petrol station around Lochside, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It's recoverable a lot more frequently than drivers fear, even though driving is what moves the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Your tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Turned off is the way the car stays.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. This is recoverable from far more frequently than people expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
