Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lode Heath? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on your engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a car needs while the fuel is still inside your tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has stopped in Lode Heath or the rest of West Midlands, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Contact us so our technicians can show you what follows next before you attempt anything else.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and your injectors wear. That's why you do not start the car, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the point drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Flicking the ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We would sooner get to an odd place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to sort out than a motor that has never shifted. On the verge on Hermitage Road, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.
  • Before you dial, gather your location. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning B91 2 — that is what decides whether our van arrives or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, about how many litres, and also whether the car has run. Those three facts decide the entire call-out.

Clearing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

A good part of the work ends up finished at the pump, because that's where it often starts. We work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's permission, so if you're still at Esso that is usually where this drain takes place.

A forecourt is the one place this can be spotted before the motor has fired. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where it stands. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key.

Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get by. Accept the help. Starting it just to roll four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Lode Heath

The call our technicians like runs like this: diesel Peugeot 308, a few litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now shut off outside Sainsbury's. What we are truly asking is how much fuel the pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

Each restart primes the lines and pulls more petrol through your filter then into the pump. So a misfuelled diesel Ford Focus on the zig-zags outside Greswold Primary School is an inconvenience, whereas the same motor restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system instead of a tank. A passer-by will advise you to shift the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. Leave it, let everyone moan, then give us a call.

What our technicians will want to know is whether that run there was short and chilly, since that is where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and what doesn't burn can slip past the piston rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Audi A3 parked in the car park by Red House carrying a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing worsens while it stands, and so leave the vehicle overnight then phone us first thing.

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off and phone us. Fine on the way out to Brueton Gardens, gutless on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; runnier fuel leaks past the close-fitting components that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Mercedes A-Class drove, the less of that pressure it held.

That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not the engine failing — and with no warning light for it, vehicles in that position normally get driven once more before somebody calls. Don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso now waiting by Solihull Gospel Hall. Turn the car off and ring us.

Lode Heath plus the villages near it

These same journeys carry us to Solihull, Elmdon Heath, Olton, Ulverley Green and Catherine-de-Barnes as well as Lode Heath, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all locations across West Midlands, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being left off that list means nothing about if our engineers come. Assuming is the thing to skip, particularly on the boundary or somewhere the satnav struggles. Phone to enquire.

This map shows the ground the page includes. The lot is ground we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move your car anywhere.

Kerbside breakdowns across Lode Heath

Some drivers find no sensible spot to stop whatsoever. Set off, then realised? Finished up by the verge on Caldwell Grove, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Okay there? Sit with it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However awkward the location, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than pressing on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

under 3 miles out of Lode Heath, the M42 is what counts now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and don't start the vehicle to move it. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring alters.

Lode Heath itself

Lode Heath is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated near the River Blythe and close to the cities of Birmingham and Solihull. Lode Heath has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most common, and the area is around 135 metres above sea level. Lode Heath is located near several other suburban areas, including Elmdon Heath and Olton, and is about 6.7 miles from Birmingham city centre. Lode Heath is also within commuting distance of London, which is approximately 94.4 miles away.

What happens when our engineers get to you in Lode Heath

  • Three things get established before any price — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Our technicians empty that tank of all the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any point, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted early, long-term damage is very rare.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Lode Heath

Do not crank it: that first step applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal in Lode Heath has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. We deal with both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Lode Heath

Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what varies it:

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Lode Heath

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Lode Heath?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this takes place. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. What settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more regularly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different issue and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. The tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

Standing next to it?

Leave the car switched off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
