Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in London Fields?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over London Fields and the rest of West Midlands. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When your engine has not yet run and the petrol is still in your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Phone so our engineers will tell you what happens from here before you try any more.
What to do first about petrol in a diesel
- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for several miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And if started, never believe it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.
- Leave your ignition be as well. Diesel has two roles: it ignites, and before it combusts it greases your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is frequently enough to prime that system, which carries that petrol out of that tank then into just those parts.
- Don't put diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it simply hands you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- Stay where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the quickest one to sort, and we'd sooner get to a difficult spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Himley Avenue, turn your hazards on then leave the vehicle there.
- Before you call, get your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting DY1 2 — that is what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, roughly how much, and whether the car has run. These three facts settle the entire call-out.
Quarter past eight. A rushed fill on the drive in. At about eleven it occurs to you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Passat has sat outside Tipton for three hours. Call us then leave the vehicle where it is. What is key is the drive in, as diesel both combusts and — before that — lubricates your pump and your injectors, while petrol only ever combusts. Those few miles ran your pump on a fuel drained of a lot of its protection, and no amount of standing in a car park puts any of that back. Hence the question about mileage rather than hours sitting, and hence the advice to leave the keys be till our engineers get there.
How much fuel your pump has sucked is what we're actually asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry we want runs like this: diesel Renault Clio, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now shut off at The Co-operative Food.
A diesel pump meters fuel to demand, and a rushed morning dash needs plenty — so three miles in the Ford Focus seems like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine outside Milking Bank Primary School, already late, a receipt in your hand reading unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, call us.
You head off at the end, once our technicians have fired it up and confirmed it runs correctly on fresh diesel, with the fuel system bled. Before that, in the car park by The Hilly House, the tainted fuel comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter comes off where your Peugeot 3008 has a serviceable one. It all starts with three questions when our technicians reach the car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.
Seldom the trouble, the place. On-street is the usual spot our technicians work, and a cramped parking spot is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you phone from close to St Barnabas, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can stand beside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the BMW 5 Series gets emptied, your filter changed where a usable one exists, the fuel lines purged and fresh fuel put through the entire circuit — because by now the worst of it is in the lines, not the tank.
Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel
The work begins at a pump, usually. Quite often it ends there as well. Still at Esso? Then that is typically where it takes place. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the site.
A filling station is the single setting the mistake is stopped before your motor has fired. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our engineers can still put it right where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key.
Roll the vehicle out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Moving it four bays does not justify cranking the motor.
Do our technicians reach your end of London Fields?
These same trips bring us to Eve Hill, Russells Hall, New Dock, Springs Mire and Dibdale besides London Fields, which is a residential suburb.
Our technicians still come. The places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most locations around West Midlands, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Close to a boundary, or anywhere your phone struggles with? Ring us to enquire rather than presuming.
That map marks the patch the page spans. The car does not need to come to us. Our technicians work across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
London Fields: broken down where you pulled up
Not everyone has the chance to pull over somewhere suitable. If you realised after setting off and ended up by the verge of Corser Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a common call for us and not a rare one.
Out of the motor if it is not wise to wait inside, beside it if it is. Don't start it up to reach a nicer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into the system. We'll bring the van to a tricky location without any trouble, and for the vehicle that is far better than carrying on.
Driven it already? Pull in, and read this
Your M5 is the road that counts here, and lies under 5 miles from London Fields. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Take the first junction that is sensible, pull up there, and never start it to move it. It changes what we bring, so mention it when you ring: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

What happens when our technicians arrive with you in London Fields
- We establish what went in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
- Our technicians empty your tank of all the tainted mixture.
- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
- We put new diesel in and prime the fuel system.
- We turn it on and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.
After that it's ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.
AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in London Fields?
Don't fire it up: that opening instruction holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.
Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own London Fields page. Both are ours to handle.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in London Fields
We can't put one number on this page truthfully, as this job is not one job. What moves it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much the tank takes.
- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.
Things we hear about petrol in diesel around London Fields
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around London Fields?
A fair portion of this work happens there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.
A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving shifts the issue along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you is not restarting it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
It is not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
No. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
You, and your car, still together?
Leave it shut off.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the car remain that way. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
