Petrol in Diesel

The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Long Sight

Stop, and keep your motor off — not on, and not for a moment to move the vehicle. Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is normally a drain and a flush, done where your vehicle stands, and what you do in the next few minutes determines that more than anything else. Below is the sequence from here, wherever in Long Sight you are.

Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Do the following first, in this sequence.

  • The keys out of the ignition. Switching the ignition on can be enough to prime the fuel system, while priming pulls petrol out of your tank toward the parts it harms. Keep the car off altogether.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You are left with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
  • Near moving traffic? Then the hazards come on before anything else, so your car is simple to see.
  • However short the way, starting it to move it is the mistake. At a forecourt, push the vehicle away from the petrol pump by hand instead, then ask the attendants to help.
  • Which fuel, and about how much? The receipt replies that, and that is where our first question starts. Do not throw it away.

Still on the move when you realised? Come off the A627(M) at the next junction if that's where you are, under a mile from Long Sight, and stop somewhere safe instead of pushing on to the services. Then begin at stage one.

Has it run yet? The fork in each Long Sight fuel drain

From this stage on, everything comes down to a single answer.

If your motor hasn't run at all:

  • That petrol is still in your tank and nowhere else.
  • The job is a drain and a flush, usually done where the car is.
  • Stage one counts for precisely this reason: it's the best position to be in.

If it has been started, even for a moment:

  • Petrol has been drawn from the tank, through the filter and into your lines.
  • Run it further and that petrol reaches the fuel injectors, having passed through the pump first.
  • The job grows with the miles — lines flushed, filter dealt with, occasionally more.

Why the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump as well as your injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't. A tank of petrol, left still, damages nothing. Pump the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

Before you call about petrol in a diesel in Long Sight: what our engineers need

A little preparation is the difference between a technician that finds you and a technician that circles.

  • Your location: a postcode beginning OL2 6 works best.
  • Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name helps — whether that is Marlborough Road or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at The Co-operative Food, for instance — and it is much quicker to find.
  • Tell us what your car is — make, model — and confirm it is diesel.
  • What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Long Sight, and so tell us which.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from your receipt — either gives us how much.
  • The distance it covered, and how heavily, if it has run at all.
  • Hire or company car? Some contracts need the owner's authorisation for this work, and getting it before our engineers arrive is quicker than afterwards.

Call 0333 366 0103 then. Email works too if it can wait, with your car parked at home, going nowhere.

Long Sight fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Hold to these: kindly meant help does the harm during the wait.

  • Wait with the vehicle if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • A kind passer-by doesn't crank it. Nor does anybody wanting to check it still works, or rolling it a couple of yards.
  • No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, something from your boot — none of it takes that petrol back out.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can by the roadside is risky — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond your tank. Do not drain the car yourself.
  • Even your radio or the windows aren't worth switching your ignition on for.

Step by step: the fuel drain when our van gets there

  • Three queries. What went in, how much, and whether it's run. Those replies set the job, which is why our quote comes after them and not before.
  • Draining it's how the blend gets taken out of that tank.
  • If it ran, your lines are holding petrol that has moved beyond your tank — so they are flushed.
  • Where your car has a workable filter, it's changed; otherwise, cleared.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and your system is primed.
  • The start-up. With clean diesel in and the system primed, it's started and checked to make sure it runs properly.

Till it runs on fresh diesel, our technicians remain with it. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly, so the vehicle can go straight back to normal use.

Back on the road in Long Sight after your fuel drain

  • After it has been started on clean fuel, there is nothing unusual to do: drive normally.
  • Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over then call us back.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, and so keep your paperwork.
  • Read the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
