Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Long Sutton

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Long Sutton and the remainder of Somerset. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the engine has not been started and the petrol is still in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much went in. A single call to us will be plenty: we shall show you what comes from here. Make that straight away.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for several miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And once started, do not trust it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates — that high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: switching it on is frequently enough to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into precisely those components.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice assumes — so don't add diesel on top to weaken it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never moved is the quickest one to deal with, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Crouds Lane? Hazards on, then leave the car there. An awkward place suits us better than a started engine.
  • Our van turning up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting TA10 9, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what got in, approximately how many litres, and whether the engine has been run. Your responses shape everything that comes after.

Can petrol be drained from your diesel at a forecourt?

Much of the work starts at the pump, which means a big part of it ends up completed at one. The drain normally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the station's consent, that is somewhere we work, and often.

At a garage, the mistake is stopped with the engine never started, and no place else manages that. The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys settle how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where your car sits.

Away from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you push the vehicle. Worth it. Moving the car four bays does not warrant starting the engine.

We will head your way, clear that tank, clean the fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into your diesel Renault Megane in Long Sutton and you're stuck outside Londis with a boot packed with shopping, phone us — and never crank it a second time to exit the space. A mile or so at gentle throttle draws hardly any diesel, which is why these are usually the straightforward ones.

Fine on the way out, flat on the way back. If that's how that drive to Long Sutton Golf Club went, the tank is where to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the tightly fitted components that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the further the Mercedes C-Class went, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere sensible, switch off then phone us.

Clearing your Dacia Duster, changing your filter where there is a usable one, flushing your lines, putting clean fuel through the whole system: that's the job, and it's shaped by the worst of it resting in the fuel lines instead of in that tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from near Holy Trinity — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand alongside without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest spot our technicians work, and so the location itself is rarely the trouble. A narrow parking spot trumps a motor driven somewhere more handy.

Switch off where you have stopped, and don't start it to find somewhere better — by Friends Meeting House or anywhere at all. Clattering, a ragged idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 5 Series telling you what is wrong.

Your filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail: that's where that mix is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. So your tank is not where most of the trouble waits by this point, and a diesel Peugeot 208 that got near Melbury Roman Villa (Scheduled Monument) needs the circuit cleared rather than drained.

Parts our vans cover around Long Sutton

Long Sutton is a rural village, so our vans head out to the town and to anywhere around it on the same rounds: Little Load, Upton, Knole, Long Load and Pibsbury.

If yours is not on that list that does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all towns across Somerset, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours. Near the border, or somewhere the satnav can't find? Contact us to enquire instead of guessing.

That map shows the ground this page spans. All of it is ground our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never bring the vehicle anywhere.

Long Sutton: stuck where you stopped

The chance to pull over anywhere safe does not fall to everyone. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up on the verge on Martock Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a routine call for us instead of an odd one.

Whether you sit by your car or step away from it rests on whether staying there is wise. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to reach somewhere handier and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. We'll take our van to a difficult place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's much better than driving on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

The M5 is the one that matters here, and lies under 15 miles from Long Sutton. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Never start it to move it. Come off at the first safe exit then turn off. Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you phone. What our engineers bring changes.

A little about Long Sutton

Long Sutton is a small village in inland Somerset, situated near the villages of Little Load, Upton, and Knole. Long Sutton lies approximately 13.5 miles from the city of Wells and 118.6 miles from London, in a low-lying area with an elevation of around 15 metres. Long Sutton has a population of around 854 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.

When our engineers get to you in Long Sutton: what happens

  • Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Away goes the tainted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • Our engineers put clean diesel in and prime the system.
  • Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to set off. Our technicians do all of it wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Long Sutton is a separate job

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — never start the vehicle — yet the fault is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue instead.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Long Sutton page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Long Sutton?

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page frankly, as this job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much that tank can hold.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it is not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Long Sutton drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Long Sutton petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this takes place. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through the fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, emptying and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later. This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than motorists fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
