Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Longbarn? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Longbarn and the remainder of Cheshire. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still in the tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Our engineers shall show you what the next stage is. Ring us — this goes ahead of anything else.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a few miles. People have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never start the car. And if started, don't rely on it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Leave the ignition alone also. Diesel does two jobs: it ignites, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is often enough to prime that system, which pulls that petrol out of the tank and into precisely those parts.
  • Never thin it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has never moved is the easiest one to deal with, and we'd much rather travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Freshfields Drive, put those hazards on and leave the car there.
  • Keep your location ready before you dial. A postcode starting WA2 0 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between the van arriving and the van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus whether your car has been run. The responses shape all that comes after.

Phone before you collect it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan this morning, and it at Padgate ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is harmless, and any damage was done on the trip in, when the pump was taking diesel that petrol had diluted.

You'll be advised to shift the car out of that gateway and fix it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags outside Christ Church CofE Primary School Padgate, a misfilled Audi A3 running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Start it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime draws more petrol beyond the filter toward your pump. Let them grumble. Phone us.

Do not chance it. The drive home from Bar Twenty Ten is perfectly possible, which is precisely the problem — a weakened tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the parts your fuel is meant to protect. Call us, then let the BMW 1 Series stay where it stands.

Happy on the way out, flat on the way back. If that is how that run to Longbarn Park went, that tank is the place to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further your Vauxhall Astra travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off then call us.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, the idle turned lumpy, and your diesel Seat Leon is now resting near Broomhead Library. That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully not the engine packing up — and because there is no warning light for it, cars in that position generally get driven again before anybody rings. Do not. Switch it off and phone us.

Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at the forecourt?

Forecourts are where this work mostly starts, and where a fair chunk of that closes. We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent, so if you're still at Asda that is generally where this drain happens.

At a forecourt, this is halted with your engine never fired, and nowhere else manages it. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

The staff will normally happily roll the vehicle clear of the pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Parts we reach near Longbarn

The same rounds carry us to Fearnhead, Padgate, Woolston, Paddington and Locking Stumps besides Longbarn, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and most places in Cheshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Assuming is the habit to resist, especially on a boundary or anywhere your phone fails. Call us and enquire.

This map shows the ground the page covers. Every bit of it is ground our technicians serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not drive the car anywhere.

Longbarn: broken down where you pulled up

Not everyone has the chance to pull over anywhere sensible. Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge on Anderson Close, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards going? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Sit beside the car when it is safe to wait in it, and clear of it if it isn't. Don't start it up to reach a nicer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into the fuel system. Pressing on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to an awkward spot, and that's no bother for us.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

This is where the M6 comes in, under a mile from Longbarn. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Never start it to reposition. Get off at the next safe junction then switch off. It affects what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

Longbarn itself

Longbarn is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated near the riverside with an elevation of around 13 metres. Longbarn lies within the North West region of England, approximately 166 miles from London, and is close to nearby places such as Fearnhead, Padgate, and Woolston. Longbarn is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock and is located near the city of Salford, about 11 miles away.

What happens when our engineers get to you around Longbarn

  • Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The tainted mixture comes out of that tank.
  • Our engineers purge the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what is left in your system isn't what started the issue.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • The engine is started and checked to make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

At that point it is ready to drive away. Our engineers do all of this wherever your car has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been spotted early, it's very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

Longbarn AdBlue removal is a different job

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — never crank it — yet the fault is not. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal in Longbarn has its own page with the detail — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Longbarn

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel queries from Longbarn drivers

Fuel drains on a Longbarn petrol station forecourt

A fair portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Our technicians visit EG On the Move and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the site's consent — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. What determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through your fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep it off. Driving is what takes the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more regularly than drivers fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with your vehicle?

Keep it turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than people fear.
