Longforgan: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With that tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is settled in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout Longforgan and the rest of Perth and Kinross, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Our team will explain what the next move is. Ring us — this happens before everything else.
What to do first about petrol in a diesel
- Do not fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car usually cannot run, and so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for a few miles. Most people get that backwards. It is not fine — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
- Switching your ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition be.
- Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice suggests — so do not put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that has not moved is the simplest one to deal with, and we would rather drive to a tricky location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Woodloan, put your hazards on and keep it there.
- Before you dial, work out your location. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting DD2 5 — that's what decides whether our van turns up or circles.
- Three details determine the entire job: the stuff you poured in, the ballpark measure involved, and whether anything has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
The drive back would roughly double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already sent a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Tiguan. So leave it where it sits. Call us from the platform if that is easier — no one needs you hovering over the vehicle outside Invergowrie while our engineers get on, and tonight beats finding out on Monday.
Diesel BMW 3 Series. A couple of litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Shut off now, outside Asda. That's the enquiry we hope for, as the real question under it is about volume through your pump rather than hours on the clock.
Move the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later — that is what somebody will say, and it's wrong. Parked on the zig-zags by the local primary school, a misfuelled diesel Nissan Qashqai is a hassle and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for politeness, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, since priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes past the fuel filter towards the pump. Let them moan. Phone us.
Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, parked by Mercat Cross. For a diesel Mercedes C-Class whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, then let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why your lines get flushed and not just your tank drained.
A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy fault in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the amount of petrol arriving at your injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck accepts the narrower petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, and so new locations see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, near Longforgan Church Hall or not, and we'll come to the Dacia Duster.
Removing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt
Pumps are where this job mostly begins, and where a fair chunk of it ends. If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that's usually where this drain takes place — we operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement.
Before the engine has fired — a garage is the one setting it gets spotted. Fuel pulled out of that tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and the fuel lines along with the tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers deal with it where your car sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.
Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that's worth doing. Firing the car for four vehicle lengths? Don't.
Longforgan and the areas next to it
Balruddery, Templehall, Benvie, Knapp, Kingoodie — every one of them on the runs that take us over to Longforgan as well, a coastal village.
We do come. Those names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for most places around Perth and Kinross, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Assuming is the habit to skip, particularly on a boundary or somewhere a satnav gets lost. Call us and check.
The map shows the ground the page includes. The car never needs to move to us. We operate across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Roadside stops around Longforgan
Not everybody gets the chance to pull over somewhere sensible. Set off, then twigged? Ended up on the verge of Station Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.
Whether you sit with the vehicle or keep clear of it rests on if sitting there feels sensible. Don't restart it to reach a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that blend deeper into the system. We will send the van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for the car that is a lot better than driving on.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
This is where your M90 counts, under 15 miles out of Longforgan. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, the idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.
Pull off at the first safe junction, switch off, and do not restart the car to reposition. Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you call. What we bring alters.
Longforgan itself
Longforgan is a small village in eastern Scotland, situated near the coast and approximately 5.5 miles from Dundee. Longforgan sits at an elevation of 44 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Longforgan is close to nearby places such as Balruddery, Templehall, and Benvie, and is home to around 730 residents.
Once we reach you in Longforgan: what follows
- The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
- Away goes the polluted mixture.
- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that started the problem.
- New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
- After it is turned on, our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.
At that point it is ready to pull away. All of this is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Longforgan?
If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — don't fire it up — yet the problem is not. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.
Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Longforgan page. Both are ours to deal with.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Longforgan
Honestly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what varies it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much that tank holds.
- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is safe for our van.
A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.
Petrol in diesel queries from Longforgan drivers
I am on a forecourt around Longforgan. Can you drain the vehicle here?
Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Often, provided the site consents: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our engineers answer on the spot.
Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mix has been sucked through the fuel system.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?
Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then leave it off. It's recoverable much more frequently than motorists expect, even though driving is what moves the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A drain and flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct problem. So no. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Is the vehicle still with you?
Switched off is the way it remains.
Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than people expect.
