Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Longholme? Don't Start It

Never fire up the motor. If the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not yet run, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, across Longholme and the rest of Lancashire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Ring us before all else happens, so you'll know what comes after that.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a few miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never crank it. And once started, don't trust it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it burns it lubricates — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off too: flicking it on is usually sufficient to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into just those parts.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Bury Road? Hazards on, and leave the car there. An awkward location suits us better than a started engine.
  • Have your whereabouts prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning BB4 6 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van turning up and the van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how much, and also whether the car has fired. Those three answers determine the whole job.

Clearing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

Pumps are where the job often starts, and where a good share of that ends. Still at Tesco? Then that is generally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Before your motor has run — the forecourt is the single place this gets spotted. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the fuel lines together with your tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians deal with it where the car is. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Starting the car to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Longholme

Car parks like the one outside Tesco are a spot we visit often, and your fuel is hardly ever the awkward part. The bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar on the way in that settles whether a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you phone, and which way the vehicle is facing. Where our technicians can't work next to your diesel BMW 3 Series we will shift the vehicle without starting it — and that isn't pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Each start primes that fuel system and sucks more of the mixture out of the tank and toward your pump, so a car shuffled twice into a nicer spot has silently turned into a bigger job than one left exactly where it stopped.

Hazards on. Engine off. Phone us. It is twenty to nine at the gates of Rawtenstall Balladen Community Primary School, you are late, and the receipt shows unleaded — and even though three miles in your Audi A4 feels like nothing, fuel gets delivered to demand, and a hurried dash asks for plenty of it.

Straightforward job, this one — till somebody takes it home. A diesel Dacia Duster sitting outside The Railway Tavern with petrol in that tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so leave it and phone once it's light. Expect a query about the run there, though. Brief and cold is precisely where petrol struggles to burn, and what won't burn can slip past the rings and into the sump.

Leave the Ford Kuga by Rawtenstall Library and ring us. We are direct about not driving on since a worn-out pump sheds, and what it loses travels onward with your fuel to your injectors downstream.

Your filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail: that's where that mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. So your tank isn't where most of the trouble waits by this point, and a diesel Kia Sportage that got near Longholme Methodist needs your circuit purged instead of emptied.

Areas we reach in Longholme

These same rounds get us to Hall Carr, New Hall Hey, Rawtenstall, Wood Top and Oakenhead Wood as well as Longholme, which is a residential suburb.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for nearly all towns across Lancashire, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Assuming is the habit to avoid, especially on the boundary or anywhere your satnav fails. Call us to ask.

Look at our map for the ground shown on this page. We operate roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and the car does not need to come to us.

Longholme: stuck where you pulled up

Not everybody gets a sensible place to stop. A common call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, ended up by the verge on Hall Carr Road or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Whether you remain by the motor or stand clear of it turns on if being in it seems wise. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. However difficult the spot, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved

Your M66 is the road which counts here, and sits under 3 miles from Longholme. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first junction that's sensible, pull up there, and never restart it to reposition. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in our van.

Longholme itself

Longholme is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Lancashire, with a mix of terraced housing and a population of around 4780 residents. Longholme sits at an elevation of 171 metres, approximately 15 miles from Salford and close to nearby places such as Hall Carr and New Hall Hey. Longholme is located in the North West region of England, about 176 miles from London. Longholme's riverside setting provides a distinctive character to the area.

Our call-out in Longholme, step by step

  • We find out what was put in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
  • That tank gets emptied of everything.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • It's run with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running smoothly.

Then it is ready to pull away. We do all of it wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, it's very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Longholme?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — while the issue beneath it's a different one altogether. The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal around Longholme has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our technicians cover both.

Longholme prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Truthfully, no single price belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what moves it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much your tank takes.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for our van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel: common queries around Longholme

I'm on a forecourt around Longholme. Can you drain the car here?

A good portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Often, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our technicians answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run. What decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through your fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving moves the issue along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different fault. So no. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, since our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Still with your car?

The engine stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
