Petrol in Diesel

Longpark: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Longpark and the rest of East Ayrshire. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the engine has not been started and the petrol is still in that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Our engineers shall tell you what the following move will be. Phone — it goes before all else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start the vehicle. And having started, do not depend on it: the fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition remains off too — turn it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.
  • Never put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it just gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Innellan Drive, anywhere — an odd place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode that starts KA3 1, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has been run. Your answers shape all that follows.

Never take it home. The journey in has already forced a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the trip back would roughly double it for no reason at all. Call us from the platform if that's easier. We don't need you hovering over your car at Kilmarnock while our engineers get on, and we'd much rather hear from you tonight than discover on Monday.

The enquiry our technicians hope for runs like this: diesel Audi A4, a few litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now shut off outside Morrisons. What we are really asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

Twenty to nine by the local primary school, already late, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, phone. Three miles in the Ford Focus sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — while a rushed morning dash needs plenty.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, so whatever occurred on the way to Hollybrae Plantation in that diesel Peugeot 3008 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on your engine to find more of it.

Fixed and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: our engineers flush it, and take the filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the confident tip you will get — drain the vehicle, refill with fresh diesel. Half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Citroen C3 near Townholm Bowling Club and it'll start, which is exactly why the tip sounds sensible. Then the motor pulls the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, because emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Longpark

On a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

A fair portion of this job is finished at a pump, since that is where it usually kicks off. Still at Morrisons? Then that's typically where it takes place. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the station.

A forecourt is the single location it can be halted before your engine has fired. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the fuel lines together with your tank. That's still not a calamity, and we put it right where the car sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Staff will normally pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Welcome the help. Firing it just to roll four car lengths is not.

Can we reach your part of Longpark?

Beansburn, Hillhead, Knockinlaw, Onthank, Altonhill — every one of those on our journeys that carry us across to Longpark too, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we don't come — there are pages for the majority of places across East Ayrshire, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours. Phone to enquire instead of presuming, especially where you're on a boundary or somewhere your phone misreads.

Use our map for the ground covered here. The lot is ground our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not move the car anywhere.

Kerbside breakdowns around Longpark

Not everybody gets a sensible spot to pull in. Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge beside Deanhill Lane, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Okay where you are? Stay by it. Not fine? Climb out and clear of it. Do not fire it up to reach a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into your fuel system. Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward spot, and that is no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, and your car has gone

Here is where the local M77 counts, under 3 miles from Longpark. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It affects what we bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

Longpark itself

Longpark is a suburban area situated on the riverside in East Ayrshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Longpark sits at an elevation of 61 metres, near the communities of Beansburn, Hillhead, and Knockinlaw. Longpark is located approximately 19.5 miles from Glasgow, making it a commuter base for the city. Longpark has a population of around 4708 residents, who enjoy the area's riverside setting.

Once our technicians arrive with you around Longpark: what follows

  • Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • The contaminated fuel is pulled from your tank.
  • Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system isn't what caused the problem.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • We turn it on and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. Our technicians do everything wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Longpark

The issue is not the same, though the opening step is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system depends on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Longpark page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Longpark

One figure wouldn't be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run. If it is not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: common queries around Longpark

I'm on a forecourt in Longpark. Can you drain the car here?

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. What decides how much work is needed is if that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving shifts the issue along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct issue. So no. Your pump still has to put up with it, because that tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Shut off is the way the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than people fear.
